Moved twice in the last year

We've moved twice this year and both times, we've used El Cheapo as they were recommended by a number of friends. Both times, the staff were polite and hardworking. I would recommend choosing an earlier time slot as our second move was quite delayed. Though they told us they would arrive between 1 and 3 pm, they did not show up until 5 pm. I don't blame the movers as they had an arduous move before us, but I wish the office staff were more honest about timelines and took more initiative in communicating with us in these situations. They tried to assure us they would arrive in 20 minutes as they were en route from Scarborough. We live downtown at Dufferin and Dundas, you can't make that time in the middle of the night, let alone rush hour! My last complaint is that one of the three movers in our second move was a bit careless and dented our kitchen wall while carrying a drawer. Of the five movers we've interacted with, he was the exception as the four others were a pleasure to work with. Overall, I would recommend this to my mother but stress the importance of choosing an early time slot.

    MINI APARTEMENT MOVE

This was a last minute move, when occupancy of my new place was delayed and I had to cope with a move to a sublet and then a move to my permanent place....while putting some stuff in storage tempoarily. A nightmare! By el cheapo coped with everything. Courteous, professional service...and no nasty price surprises.

    moving company

This was the best moving experience I've had, and I have moved many times over the years. The guys worked really hard, and fast. They put a lot of energy into the move. My previous move cost me quite a bit more for approximately the same amount of stuff, so I was impressed. their pricing is good, and they were pros. I will certainly use this company again.

    a great moving experience

I have moved four times in the Toronto area in the past 20 years and used many different movers. THIS COMPANY IS THE BEST!!!!!!! From the very first, they are professional, detailed, helpful and THEY DELIVER !!!! The initial interview is pleasant. the follow up is prompt, and Eric and Erick , who did the load in/load out were pleasant, cheerful , attentive all the way. They call you if they know you will be delayed, they are very attentive and in my opinion, you hare getting great value for the money , especially if you are moving within the GTA

    Move from condo to condo

My daughter was moving from one condo to another and was stood-up by a bad moving company that we had pre-booked. Within 4 hours of initially calling El Cheapo they sent 2 men and a truck to move her. This company was professional and charged only what they quoted despite the fact it was a last minute emergency move. The 2 moving men were fast, friendly, knowledgable and very good at their job. They took on the job at the end of their working day, just to help us out because we were stranded. We are recommending this company to everyone we know.

Move from house to storage and house

Moved on December 11. Move was a little complicated as we had to move stuff from my house to a storage unit and my temporary location. When the movers arrived they agreed that it made more sense to do the storage run first, come back to the house and do the other part of the move separately to ensure nothing got mixed up. I warned them that the storage unit was already quite crowded and was afraid that stuff wouldn't fit in entirely, but they got it all in! They worked very hard and efficiently. They stopped for lunch but didn't charge me that time. All of my furniture and belongings were treated with respect. They appreciated that I wanted to help but couldn't lift certain items. My only beef -- if I really have one is that when I booked I said I preferred the earliest time possible, but was told as I was booking quite close to my moving date (as my other movers had fallen through) that I was slotted for the noon to 2pm arrival time. Which I obviously took. The guys arrived around 1pm, and I asked them how the first move of the day had been, and they said that I was their first move of the day... so I don't understand a) why I couldn't have an earlier start time and b) why they weren't there right at noon then... unless the truck was being used by another crew earlier in the day??? In any event, I would use them again for sure. Every single person I spoke to about my move was polite and professional. Impressive considering all the terrible moving companies out there.

    move fridges

They quoted $95 + tax to move old fridge out to curb and new fridge from basement to ground floor. Though told well in advance that fridges were to be moved, they gave no hint that pipe connections could be a problem.Sent two very nice guys who were unable to disconnect old fridge from metal pipe. Spent total of 20 minutes. Head office insisted on charging minimum 1-hour rate $95 + tax) for the 20 min. the guys spent accomplishing absolutely nothing. Asked for a break on the bill - - no break given.

    Intra-city move

Our move was in February 2010. The movers arrived at the end of their time window and set straight to work. Unfortunately, the move took twice as long as I was expecting, and for a number of reasons. We lived on a one way street in downtown Toronto with moderate traffic at rush-hour traffic. I bought a parking stub for the truck so they could park across the street and avoid a ticket (knowing that El Cheapo policy was that customers handled any parking violations). I then left to pick up my car for the day and when I returned they had moved the truck closer to the building and parked halfway on the sidewalk. As a pulled up, a parking enforcement officer came trundling down the sidewalk and slapped an $80 ticket on the van despite my arguing with him. As a result, the van had to park on the road, but blocked the traffic that had begun to accumulate. They had to move the van six times to allow traffic to get by. This significantly slowed down the move. Not El Cheapo's fault, but made the day longer for sure. The Lead Hand told me that I should have said I had mainly antique furniture as this has to be wrapped more carefully than non-antique items (thus contributing to longer duration for the move). The lady who booked us never asked if we had antique furniture and I never thought to tell her, but I appreciated the fact that they were trying to be careful rather than rushing to get the job done. The Lead Hand was extremely professional and worked very hard. Of the two other guys with him, one young guy was clearly new but worked hard, and the other was older and did not work as hard. The older worker preferred to stand around and smoke while the others sweated it out. The move took almost seven hours and more than double the anticipated time and cost. I discovered later that they had badly scratched the top of my grandmother's antique dresser. I called then emailed the manager. He offered to 'make a deal': they would pay the parking ticket and I would forget the scratched dresser. I thought this was kind of unprofessional since I didn't feel responsible for the parking ticket. I ended up accepting the 'deal' despite my reservations. Overall, the move was stressful. My intention in hiring movers was to make this a stress-free day, which it was not. Considering the company as a whole, the Lead Hand's professionalism and hard work of (part) of the team was ultimately offset by the shadiness of the manager's dealings.

    moving from Pickering to Toronto

I used El cheapo movers on August 3rd to move from a home in Pickering to an apartment. It was the best moving experience of my life. Brad K and Max S are exceptional young men and the best movers. They did an incredible job, were always positive and I had the whole apartment set up by the time they left. I have already recommended them to some friends.

Moved 2 bedroom apt to a new condo

Not only that these guys are punctual, they called in to check if they could come earlier. Due to elevator bookings I had to reject the idea so they came on agreed time. Daren, Eric and Georgie were true professionals and fun to work with. There was no furniture too heavy for them and they even helped me take apart one of the IKEA wardrobes that could not possibly be carried out. These three guys moved our fully furnished 2 bedroom apartment in 3.5 hours. No travel time, fuel surcharge or other hidden fees were charged. Just plain work time. All in all, amazing experience. Would recommend to everyone.
