rough-in completion for new house duplex

We looked on homestars to find an electrical contractor because the previous electrical contractor that was working on our project who was recommended by our architect had abandoned our rough -in. This was after we already paid him and he hadn't pulled a permit to do the job, and left the last 20% of the job undone. The previous electrician abandoned the project without telling us and left us hanging for many months causing thousands of dollars of extra costs. We found Mark of House Depot. We got three or four quotes, and Mark was the cheapest by almost half of some of the other guys. But the main reason we chose him was because he said he was going to test our switches, lights and sockets before the drywall went on. This was an advantage because we didn't want to find out something wasn't working after finishes were put in. We asked Mark to do some other work that he was not initially aware of and he did tell us it would be extra so that his costs did approach the other guy's initial quotes but we got all the items we wanted and many lights are working even though we are still at the rough in stage. Mark had done a forensic exam of our existing system and drew a schemata, which he has offered to give us. He finished within a very reasonable time frame. Another advantage of going with Mark is his extensive knowledge of hvac systems. He has found some deficiencies with our hvac guy's configuration and we are exploring these concerns. Great job and we are looking forward to the installation of the electrical finishes.

Dear Joe, I really appreciate your comments. The first time I came to your house I saw what contractors have done and have taken advantage of you. I really felt sad for you. I explained not all the contractors are bad, sometimes you find rotten apples inside good ones. From beginning I told you the hvac is not up to code and causes fire to your house. You said you already paid because the builing inspector said the hvac installations are good. I explained the inspector does not have the qualifications to say so. I showed you the ways with no cost to force the fully paid hvac contractor to come back and fix the mess they have done. I am sure you will get through the rough time you are having. God bless you

It was cold and my furnace was not working. Mark came out late in the evening and fixed it. Mark is a great guy to work with. Very personable, conscientious and cleans up afterwards. Can't ask for anything more!

    Gas pipes (furnace/water tank)

I looked for 3 YEARS for someone who would come and replace the pipes we had as they were not to code and were leaking condensation back into our house. The drywall had molded and we were in danger of spreading mold to the children in the house. It has to be done this Fall or we were going to be in big trouble again this winter. The dehumidifier was helping but it was not going to be enough. After calling, Mike arrived immediately and showed me his list of degrees, certificates, diplomas and honourary certificates for everything from AutoCAd to Electrcial Engineering - this guy has credentials for days! The job was quick, painless, they cleaned up every particle of dust, treated my Mom like a queen, played with the kids and even came back to check the caulking a day later. When I asked him to put in a fireplace, he said NO! it wouldn't solve my heating issue and recommeded another contractor who could address it faster and cheaper. i will not hesitate to call them again for any issues about heating, electricity or my furnace. AMAZING customer services. Thanks for all your follow up calls!!

    Panel upgrade and follow-up

Mark installed a new breaker panel for me about 3 years ago and did a nice job. Recently I had a partial electrical outage in the house and so I called Mark (he left his card on the panel). It was fairly late in the evening, and I left a message on his voice mail. He called back within minutes and walked me through some trouble shooting steps. He determined that it was likely a problem outside the house and gave me the Hydro number. Sure enough one of the under ground load lines had burnt out and hydro came to fix it a few days later. Thanks Mark, you not only did a good install, but gave great (no cost) customer service years later!

    Electrical Work

While pleasant on the phone and in person and tried to rectify some of the missteps, I would not recommend this company for electrical work. The most serious issues were: -- after the electrician was done we no longer had working lights in our living room. we still can't turn them on -- never showed up on time -- left a big mess (including pieces of wiring around on the floor for our infant to find and eat, leaving our ladder in the hallway - they didn't have one?, and pieces of material from the ceiling all over our bathroom) If we'd asked they might have come back to re-wire the light in the living room, but we did not want to wait all day for them to show up late again.

    Answer from pro:

Hi Saul You emailed me for a job to do the followings, in Jan., 2011 1.Your bathroom ceiling is wet in the winter and the fan is not working properly 2. your basement needs a fan 3. several programmable timers to be installed 4. loose and broken plugs We talked to you and said the price is $35/hr per person for this job. I asked you to supply the fans and programmable timers, which you kindly asked us to buy the materials, which I agreed you pay the invoice plus the time I spend for buying them When I came to your house I used drop sheets and had my own ladder as well. A. Your wife said that the bathroom in the winter pours water in the winter and probably a water pipe is leaking. I went to your attic which were full of insulations(I had itches for many days after your job due to the insulations in your attic) and noticed that a.the fan is not safely installed b. there is no vapor barriers for the fan, this causes the moisture in the bath goes to your attic, and freezes around the fan, thus causing looking drain on the roof. That was the reason you were saying a pipe is broken or leaky c. Full of molds in your attic due to this water in the winter and cold days. d. there was no venting pipe for the fan e, no inulated vent pipe were used consequently, I had to go to home depot again to buy the extra materials to make sure the molds do not happen again I installed the fan according to all the electrical codes and building codes, and cleaned the molds by my own hands. B. Then we went to downstairs and removed the fan, but like your fan in the upstairs there was no vent. I explained to you, we need to install a new insulated duct and have to make access to outside. I explained to you this takes several hours. Which your wife called you and eventually you disagreed to do the install for that. Which could be nothing other than to save money at my cost. As you know I gave that price of $35/hr/labor for total job not part of the job. You expected to spend more than two hours and go to home depot with the company truck and administration time and return the fan and get the refund. Which does not make sense for any company to sacrifice so much to make you happy. You know that it is too much to expect from us for the labor . The price of the fan is somewhere between 30 to 40$, which I can not remember exactly C. I showed the programmable timers( I am not sure how many) and explained the functions of the programmable timers to your wife. I explained to her what it does is that you can program to work for on a 24/hr day,and what you should expect from it. She agreed and said that is what exactly she wanted( I explained to her several times and even told her it does not make sense what she wants, but she refued to explain the reason behind it, which she was later obliged to explain). So I installed them and to install them I needed to modify the circuit to make it work. After so much work and the timers installed, then your wife said this is not what she wanted She said she wanted the timers so that the lights turns on and off at certain times at night so that our neighbors think that somebody is inside the house and stops the burglary. She told me to open all the timers and put them back in the original box and return them. And put the previous switches back. Which I said this is not fair to the home depot, I give you the receipt and asked you do the return yourself. Before leaving the job site, I cleaned all the debris, vacuumed your house, and made sure everything is in working. This is part of our routine and we do it in every jobsites After we left I called you if you have provided the timers, for few weeks, which you were only interested to return the fan to home depot(and get the refund)which was supposed to be installed in the basement. During these times you never mentioned about the mess, or something not working for several months, until I saw your comment in the homestars, this can easily proved and verified from the emails sent back and forth between you and me. You said you are going to install the timers yourself, although according to the ESA(electrical safety code in Canada, this is illegal and an authorized person should do it and effect the insurance if a fire god forbids happens) you are not allowed to. But anyway it is your house. If something was not working if could be of unauthorized personnel doing the job You said you paid $600, for you it may look too much, but for a company although i do not have overhead like other, is not sufficient event to cover the cost, as the much part of it was for the materials, and refued to pay $35/hr/labor. You only paid 35/hr for two of us plus the exact amount of the materials which I had to make three times trip to home depot for them. Is it fair for $30 to $40 refund, I use gas, truck company, 2 to three hours, and administration job to do the reund, which I even was not supposed to buy them for you. Although I did

    Update electrical service and wiring

I hired House Depot to update the electrical service in my house after seeing great reviews for them on Homestars. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them. Mark was very knowledge and diligent in addressing all my questions and concerns, and did an excellent job on time and budget. House Depot updated my electrical service to a new panel and wiring system in a 80 year old house. I had an excellent experience with House Depot right from the time Mark arrived to give me a quote, throughout the completion of the job, and follow up after the work was completed. Their price was very fair. The quality of work was great and job was completed on time. Overall I am very happy with the job House Depot did and would highly recommend them.
