Review from HomeOwner Review left on 2 Apr 2011Rating: 5 out of 5I am most pleased with the new roof I got from Sharp Exteriors. Their estimator came right away and was very knowledgeable. I was glad when they informed me that extra wood needed to be changed (I was expecting it due to the water leak we had a few weeks back). The installation process went without any problems and their guys were really nice. I was impressed with the cleanup.. something I was looking out for since my neighbour's roof experience with another contractor wasn't too pleasant. I will happily refer Sharp Exteriors to anyone.Review from HomeOwner HomeOwner

In the Spring of 2009, Sharp Exteriors did the garage roof quickly and cleaned up the site. The issue was that they left nails and pieces of shingle cuts underneath the new roof!!!! Had to call them back to fix this...they did...but somewhat shoddy work in the first place. In 2011, the roof has "fish-mouths" in a number of locations. I will stick with the 6.0 rating for now for Sharp Exteriors now, even though that in 2011 Sharp Exteriors informed Homestars that I was not a legitimate customer and my review was withdrawn temporarily. Please note that I spent $6,000 on my house roof in the Spring of 2011, however I did not give my business to Sharp Exterior as I was able to find another reputable roofing company in Homestars.Review from HomeOwner HomeOwner

Dear Sharp Exteriors I was told by your estimator to address this issue to the Sales Manager for Sharp Exterior's Roofing Company, which I did in writing, but never got a reply. In that e-letter I mentioned my concern for previous work done by Sharp Exterior's on our property which included removal of existing Roof and replacing boards as per your Company Standards , work that was done in 1998 for which we paid close to $3000 which included a 25 year warranty. I called back Sharp Exteriors for a quote when I noticed some defective parts on the roof .This new quote included per your appraiser : full replacement of the existing Roof plus parts ,all work previously done by Sharp Exterior's Roofing in the past ,documented in the sales bill I still have. Over a phone conversation about your products used on our roof you mentioned that Sharp Exterior's had stopped using that defective material due to the number of complains received then .You told me to contact the manufacturer directly instead, I also mentioned if you were in no position to make a decision, to escalate this concern to higher levels and offer us a more satisfactory alternative so we emailed you ,but never got a reply. In re-considering Sharp Exterior's was aware of the defectiveness in the Materials & Product used and Sold to the Public then, Sharp Exterior's should had offer full replacement of Materials and Labor, rather than keeping silence to the public and wait for customers to claim their Warranty when the problem would arise. We don't consider fair having paid $3000 for a new Roof ,replacing Boards, Vents, Chimneys and what else was suggested in 1998 and be forced to do the same work again paying another $3000 as your new quote indicates ,instead, you only suggested help in procuring a claim through the warranty purchased which would only gives us a couple hundred bucks ,as you said. It is with this in mind ,that I have asked for your Co-operation in not writing the Manufacturer of the material used in getting a couple hundreds in reimbursement as we been told by you and your estimator , but to assume responsibilities and replace defective material used 8 or 10 year ago when Sharp Exterior's became aware with complains for the product used then. Hope someone else gets help.Answer from pro:
Yes, the Customer should definitely be aware! This is in response to Mr. J.B. in Erin Mills: Sharp Exteriors is an installer and a facilitator; we are not the shingle manufacturer, therefore, cannot be held responsible for manufacturer defects in the shingles previously installed on your roof. This is why, after a meeting with our estimator and then with the production and operations manager, you were advised to contact the manufacturer in order to start a claim. Our representative also offered you assistance with facilitating the claim process, which you refused. At the time of installation, there were only two shingle manufacturers available to us, and one of those companies was up for sale. Therefore, we chose the more reputable one that was available. You are right in stating that we have been aware of the product’s defects, and that is why we have stopped using this product over 6 years ago; however, since we’re not the manufacturer or supplier/retailer, we cannot initiate a manufacturer product recall. Please note that the manufacturers we currently use are two of the best shingle producers on the market. Also the modern fibreglass shingle technology is much better than it was ten years ago, so now the shingles can be expected to last beyond their specified time period. In fact, the two manufacturers we currently use both warrantee all their architectural laminate shingles for a lifetime period. However, the shingle warranty is still a manufacturer ruling and we, as an installer, cannot influence or change the way the manufacturer chooses to pro-rate their product. Since all manufacturers pro-rate their products, we strongly urge all clients to inquire into purchasing an extended warranty; in any roofing installation, with any manufacturer, or any contractor authorized to offer such an upgrade on behalf of the manufacturer. The extended warranty extends the non-pro-rated period, thus offering more complete coverage for three to four times the length of time than what the regular warranty offers. Yes, it does mean a higher initial cost, but it ensures overall peace of mind in the long run. The shingle warranty offered to Mr. J. B. by that manufacturer is pro-rated; as a result, it loses its original value as time passes. We understand that you were not satisfied with the manufacturer’s pro-rated offer, but that is the only option you have to receive any monetary reimbursement. As there are no workmanship issues, and all materials other than the shingles have fulfilled performance and contractual obligations, we cannot offer you an entirely new roof. Sharp Exteriors thanks you for your comments.

We had our roof done by Sharp Exteriors last year and were very satisfied with the results. When we signed the contract, we were told we would probably need a few boards replaced, but they wouldn't know for sure how many would be done until they were up there and stripping off the old roof tiles. The extra boards were not in the original contract, but we knew they would be an additional expense,so we were not surprised or misled. We also put in a call to them a couple of months ago about a minor problem - and they came out the next day and fixed it. We find they really live up to the warranty they extended in the contract. All in all, we'd definitely recommend this company. The salesman was extremely professional and the roofers did a very efficient and neat job and cleaned up after. Our neighbours also had their roof done around the same time and were equally pleased with their new roof.Review from HomeOwner HomeOwner

I usually don't write reviews for anything unless a company goes beyond my expectations. The estimator was very professional and knew his stuff well. The coordination of both my roof and window projects went smooth from start to finish. The right material and most importantly, the right people on the installation. Overall, I am very pleased and will definitely recommend Sharp Exteriors. My 2 cents.. (hope this helps someone) I did a lot of research and got estimates from well known roof companies after my neighbour shared with me his awful experience with a roofing company from Hamilton. When spending thousands of dollars on big projects, I will recommend people go to the place of business of the company you select. If they run their business off their home or cell phone, then you know you are dealing with a fly by nighter. Pick a local reputable company with a real place of business. Beware of all the 'certification' given to a company by a manufacturer. My neighbour's roof was done by a master elite certified contractor and they did a very poor installation. I had them over for an estimate without knowing they did my neighbour's roof, the salesperson was a joke. I seriously think the manufacturer should re-check who they give out their certification to.Review from HomeOwner HomeOwner

They did our roof completely and my daughters totally new and did an excellent job. They had to add the sheeting as it was rotted through. The owner dealt with us and we've now used in a couple of times and will be someone I always use.Review from HomeOwner HomeOwner

Sharp Exteriors quoted on a new roof, stating that a couple of sheets of additional wood might be needed at $45.00 each. Financing was arranged at $4900.00 ($300.00 over bid price) to provide ample allowance for the possible extra wood and the sales rep said the company would refund the difference to me by cheque. After the job was completed they said the total came to $4995.00. When I called the company to question how the price could have jumped by $400.00, the first person told me it was because of tax plus 2 extra pieces of wood. I had been told to anticipate 2 extra pieces of wood (total $90.00) so I was fine with that, but the tax had already been included in the original price. He passed me to a second person who also told me that there had been a change order for 2 extra pieces of wood. I again questioned how 2 extra pieces of wood could result in a $400.00 price difference and asked for a copy of the documentation, which was then faxed to me. Lo and behold, the document shows my acceptance signature on the proposal but the quoted price of the job had been whited out and a new, higher number had been written over it. They now say the original price (the one for which I signed) had not included any of the 8 sheets of wood used in total. This is directly contrary to what the sales rep had initially told me, and begs the question of why the other company reps both referred to a change order for 2 extra pieces of wood, not 8. And what possible justification can there be for whiting out the original quotation price, over my signature but without my knowledge or consent, and writing in an arbitrary new number? As I have a copy of both the original quotation to which I agreed and signed and I also have a copy of the same quotation after they altered it, I have little doubt that I would win if I chose to fight it in court and as a matter of principle I would like to do so. Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the resources to invest in legal action, so I will pay it. But buyer beware - if you choose to deal with Sharp Exteriors be very sure you have all your i's dotted and your t's crossed.
