    chimney rebuild

These folks were responsive to my questions, came when they said they were going to, were exceedingly pleasant -- and now my chimney doesn't leak! I like that they're local and that it's a family business.

    FOUNDATION & WALL REPAIR

We have had Straight Up do a few different jobs on our house from tuck-pointing and parging, to pillar repair and cement work. In this instance, we needed to repair an existing extension on the back of our house by putting in a new foundation and wall on one side as well as underpinning another wall . Tony and his team worked very well with the Engineer and completed the job on time and on budget. Straight Up always does a great job and their employees work neatly and efficiently. On this particular job, I really appreciate how Tony and Crystal went above and beyond to deal with City Building Inspectors to assure that the permit was closed. Straight Up is our number one recommendation for any kind of masonry / cement work. They really are the best.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks and we where happy to help with the city inspectors. Also thanks for the referrals. Tony and Crystal.

    Brick work

Tony and his team did a wonderful job with brick replacement, rebuilding our front pillar as well as some major work on our walk up. Declan oversaw the work. His team came on time, always cleaned up and offered invaluable suggestions. We were so impressed we are going to have straight up masonry do all our window sills.

    Flagstone Steps Relaid

I found Straight Up Masonry on HomeStars and reached out to them about our front steps. The mortar had cracked, and the steps were "floating". From initial appraisal to work completion, I could not be more pleased. The assessment and work was done while I was at work. In fact, I never met the team, but the finished product speaks for itself. What was once an eyesore and safety issue is now a beautiful front steps again. Many thanks as the whole process could not have been easier.

    Answer from pro:

Thank you, G. We're happy to make this process easy for you so you can enjoy your steps again! - Crystal

    brick repair and siding removal

I can not express enough how fantastic is was working with Straight Up Masonry. They were professional every step of the way. From Crystal to Tony and all the guys it was a great experience. We had a large job. The siding on our Victoria house was removed to expose the original brick. Then the brick was repaired and replaced in certain areas. The results were beyond our expectations Each step was explained to us in detail to ensure we fully understood the process. There was a situation where a significant section of our bricks were unstable and dangerous. Tony and team alerted us immediately and walked through the steps needed to correct it and they did so it a timely fashion. We also had our front walkway redone in concrete and it looks amazing. I would recommend Straight Up Masonry to anyone, they are super friendly, polite, professional and all round good people

    Answer from pro:

    Replace Porch Pillars

Both pillars on my front porch needed replacing as they had been built incorrectly and without adequate footings. STM had been recommended to me by several people and their quote was very competitive. The communication was excellent in the build up and they explained all the work to be done. The work was completed in 3 days and the the guys who did the work were very professional, hard working and left the site clean and tidy each day. The job came in on budget and completed pillars looks absolutely fantastic. I cannot recommend these guys enough; they are excellent.

    Answer from pro:

Thank you, Tim. It was great to work with you.

Taking advantage of a Senior. Tuck pointing done, quoted on 1.5 days and did a 4 hour rushed job

We hired Straight Up Masonry on the recommendation of a friend. The quote was for 1 to 1.5 days and all deep pockets of mortar to be blown and repaired. They came Friday for 4 hours and left. There are still various deep pockets left that were never touched, and parts of the job were sloppy. This is my fathers house, who is 86 and I feel he was completely taken advantage of. When he called to discuss the job that ended up being $400/hour - he was berated and yelled at. I don't know who thinks they can treat people like this - user beware.

    Answer from pro:

Kurt, I am saddened to read this Kurt. In the almost 7 years since I started this business I have prided myself on honesty and integrity. I would never take advantage on anyone young or old. I (Tony Devlin, Owner of Straight Up Masonry) carried out my site visit on the 10th of May 2017 are receiving your email on the 4th of May, you said you would be home which you where but I was "perfectly ok to assess the by Himself". After meeting you at the door I carried out my site inspection and left, pretty standard procedure. On the 12th of May we sent the written estimate along with pictures highlighting the areas of concern and which needed repair. You called the office and accepted the job. You did not pay your deposit to secure your job in my calendar, again standard procedure but I was not concerned as you where happy for us to arrive if we had a "free day". My mistake. We arrived on the 9th of June to carry out the work. This means you had 4 weeks between receiving our estimate and pictures and us arriving, now how did we take advantage of you since you had the price and pictures before we even set foot on the property? At no stage did we or anyone else tell you the job would take 1.5 days. The day we had to carry out your work 1 employee called in sick, I cancelled his much larger job but sent his partner along with the original guy to do the work instead of sending him home. I had planned on the job to be done within 1 day by 1 guy instead we got it done in 4 hours by 2 guys. Weather I send 1 guy to handle the job or several it is of no concern to you or anyone else. After we sent the invoice you called the office again and flat out refused to pay your bill because you "don't think your guys are worth the money you pay them" After I called and tried to explain you said "take me to court" and hung up the phone. I called back to explain to you man to man the situation at which point you start asking for my financial situation, none of your concern, you asked how much do I pay my guys and how much profit do I make, again not your business. I tried to explain that business have overheads but your wouldn't accept that, you kept asking why I pay my guys $400 per hour, which by the way, is pure nonsense. At the end of the day Kurt, You clearly don't like to see a small business or any business make money. You where happy to have the work done but not happy to pay. In the end you did send you cheque, Thank you. Our company policy is not to accept payment until work is completed in full. If there was an issue with the work or we missed a section then we would be happy to have returned and taken care of these issues asap with no charge to yourself. This has been been our way of doing things since we I started this company and will remain that way. I don't claim to be perfect and sometimes on pointing joints things can be missed. Unfortunately you did not give us this opportunity. We wish you all the best. Tony Devlin Owner

    Pillar Rebuild

A couple of years we noticed that the pillar on our front porch was beginning to crumble at the base. We had various companies come out and provide their professional opinion of what needed to be done. Tony from Straight Up Masonry was prompt to respond to my job request, looked at the pillar and gave me to options and advice for how to proceed. The cost estimate was very fair! Now the job is done and we couldn't be happier with the quality of work and the positive experience of working with this company! From beginning to end they (Tony and his wife Crystal, Mitch, Declan, Damien and the team) were reliable, professional, responsive and accommodating! The bottom line is this....they showed up and they did what they said they were going to at the time and price they said they were going to do it!!! I'm so glad I found them on Homestars and highly recommend them to you now. Best wishes, Jennifer

Thanks Jennifer, Was our pleasure to help out. Tony.
