Installation of a residential generator transfer switch in order to power essential circuits by a gas generator during a power failure

My house is heated by a boiler/radiator system and I do not have any other source of heat (e.g. fireplace) to heat my home during an extended power failure. Given that a family member living in downtown Toronto was stranded without power for 6 days and had to finally abandon her house when temperatures dropped to -14C, it was time for me to look at options to power my house during an extended power failure. I contacted Ring Electric for a quote to install a natural gas "Generac" generator. Bryan Verhulp, the owner of Ring Electric returned my call the same day and then visited my house in order to prepare an estimate. Given that my house has small yards, Bryan explained to me that there was not sufficient space to meet the distance requirements for clearances between the "Generac" generator and items such as my windows, wood porches, property lines, etc. Bryan then helped me to look at alternatives that could power the essential circuits (i.e. heating system, fridge, gas cooktop hood vent) in my house. In the end, Bryan recommended the installation of a transfer switch panel that would be powered by a lightweight portable 2000 watts gasoline generator that would sit on my back porch and be plugged into the transfer switch panel via an exterior inlet plug. To use this system during a power failure, all I have to do is place the generator on my rear porch, start it up and then plug it into the exterior inlet plug that is wired to the transfer swiitch panel. Next, I just have to go to my basement and switch over the power source from Ontario Hydro to my gas generator via the transfer switch panel. This is a great solution for my needs and is easy to use! I found Bryan and his staff of electricians who installed the transfer switch panel and wiring to be very helpful and to provide excellent serivce in a friendly and professional manner. They even wore "booties" over their shoes to protect my floors. I highly recommend Ring Electric to anyone who requires electrical work done in their house. I give them A+ rating!

    Electrical Work

Most recently we had Ring in to install some under cabinet lighting and fluorescents in the basement. As usual the work was done correctly, quickly and professionally. They were also able to help with some wiring issues in our garage at the same time. We've used Ring many times over the years for various electrical needs big and small and they have always exceeded expectations.

    Electrical repairs

We had an issue with three plugs and one light, they just stopped working. Called Brian first thing in the morning and he said he would come by within the hour and he did. Very professional, excellent interaction with a very worried client who owns an old home. Brian checked everything out to ensure the safety of our panel, fixed the problem, identified another and fixed that very quickly and efficiently. Left me with instructions should the situation happen again. I cannot say enough about this company and Brian. For those of you who hesitate to call professionals, do not hesitate for one minute to call Ring Electric for their honest, practical expertise.

Install overhead lighting, adding outlets, running network cables

We moved into an 80's home with no overhead lights in any of the bedrooms and only one plug in the basement. Bryan came and gave us a reasonable quote to put overhead lighting in 3 bedrooms and a ceiling fan in the master, as well as adding some outlets in the basement and running some network cable for the home office. The work was done shortly after. The team that did the work was very professional and neat. We are so happy we got this done and we are very pleased with the job that Ring Electric did.

    Tripping Breaker

Furnace breaker tripped overnight. Brian quickly identified the culprit as a hidden switch that almost burnt the house down! Furnace was up and running within the hour, with a proper accessible switch. Will definitely contact Brian the next time we need electrical help.

Replacing pot lights and porch light fixtures

I am so lucky that the other 3 companies I contacted never bothered getting back to me. Ring Electric: Professional, honest, dependable, punctual, polite. These are just a few of the words that come to mind. I highly recommend this company. No mess left and just lovely to deal with.

    Installation/replacement of light fixtures

We needed a light installed in our dining room nook over the table and wanted 5 other fixtures replaced throughout the main floor and out in the backyard. Bryan’s team did this work in less than one morning and the house looks transformed. I was expecting big holes since they had to cut through the wall and one part of the ceiling to run the wire through for the new fixture over the table but the patching that we have to do is minimal and will be easy. The team was professional, efficient and reassuring, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the work. My mother also had a lot of fixtures installed and/or replaced in her new house and is going to hire Ring Electric again for more work. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Thanks again!
