Adding an ensuite far from existing plumbing? Any advice?

Anonymous user 30/06/2026 - 8:24 AM

Can I put a toilet and sink in my bedroom even though there's no existing plumbing? The current sewage line and bathroom are on the other side of the house. Any idea on how much this might cost if it can be done? Thanks!

Yes, you can add an ensuite even far from existing plumbing, but it requires running new water supply and drain lines back to your main system. Toilets need proper venting, and the work may involve cutting floors, walls, or even concrete to connect to the sewer. Costs vary depending on accessibility, but it usually runs several thousand dollars once plumbing, permits, and fixtures are included. A plumber will need to inspect the space to give an accurate quote.

Yes, you can add a toilet and sink to your bedroom by using a macerating upflush pump system (like Saniflo), which shreds waste and pumps it through a narrow 1-inch pipe inside your walls straight to the distant sewage stack. This motorized system avoids the need to tear up your entire home to lay traditional sloped pipes, keeping installation costs between $3,500 and $7,000. If you choose traditional gravity plumbing instead, expect costs to climb between $6,000 and $15,000+ due to the extensive framing and drywall destruction required to slope a large 3-inch drain across the house.
