Paving the driveway
Anonymous user 30/06/2026 - 8:53 AM
My neighbours and I share an island between our driveway. If I decide to do my half to extend my driveway with asphalt. Would I be able to do that just on my half. I don’t want to join our drive way together. Would that be ok?
Are you a pro and able to answer this question?

Yes, you can pave just your half of the shared area as long as you stay within your property line and don’t affect your neighbor’s side. Make sure there’s a clear boundary between both driveways and that drainage and access aren’t impacted. It’s also courteous to inform your neighbor before starting the work.

Yes, you can legally asphalt only your half of the shared island, but you must keep all excavation, gravel base preparation, and hot asphalt strictly on your side of the property line. To prevent your new asphalt from spilling over or structurally blending into their side, you must have your contractor install a permanent metal or heavy-duty plastic paving edge restraint directly along the boundary line. Before booking a paving crew, have you already had a surveyor stake out the exact property line, or are you planning to use a physical feature like an existing curb to divide the space?
