How can I clean tar off my brick wall?

Anonymous user 04/11/2026 - 2:19 PM

Hey there! I'm looking for advice on how to get rid of some tar on my brick wall. There used to be a small addition connected to my garage, and it left tar stains on the brickwork from the roof. I'm considering hiring someone to take care of it but not quite sure what to look for. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Removing tar from brick requires removing as much surface material mechanically while cold before using solvents, which prevents liquefied asphalt from absorbing deeper into the porous brick. Do not use heat, which drives tar deeper into the brick. Hold an ice pack or a plastic bag filled with ice cubes directly against the tar blob for 5 to 10 minutes until it hardens completely. Once brittle, gently chip away the bulk buildup using a stiff plastic putty knife or dull metal scraper held nearly flat to avoid gouging the brick face. To get rid of light residue spray WD-40, mineral spirits, or an automotive tar remover directly onto the spot and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to break down the petroleum binders.
