Thinking about replacing my garage door with French doors. Any tips or advice?
Anonymous user 23/10/2026 - 10:11 AM
Hi there, I have a detached garage that I don't use for parking, and I'm considering replacing the regular garage door with French doors because I mainly use it for storage. Is it possible to simply replace the doors without doing a complete renovation at this time? Additionally, would I need any permits for this change? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, you can do it. It's not just pulling the old door out and putting French doors in though — a garage opening is way wider than a set of French doors, so part of it has to be framed in and finished properly, with good flashing and a proper threshold so water stays out. If it's just for storage or a workshop it's pretty straightforward. I'd check with the city first though — once you start changing the opening, a permit can come into it.
