What is the required depth for gravel and asphalt in a residential driveway?
Anonymous user 15/10/2025 - 11:00 AM
I'm having an issue with my contractor over our asphalt driveway. It doesn't seem to match the standard measurements I've come across online when checking different websites. The gravel base is less than 5 cm and the first layer of asphalt is around the same thickness, with the final layer being about 2.5 cm. Are these thicknesses for the layers acceptable or should I be concerned? The driveway was installed directly on bare soil. Many thanks.

Hi the right way is: the foundation should be dug 12 to 15 inches deep, then 3/4 inch crushed gravel poured in up to 2 inches below grade. Then a 3 inch layer of hot asphalt is applied, which is then rolled and compacted one full inch to bring it down to grade. Hope this helps.
