Switching from a gas cooktop to an induction/electric one

Hello, I've just been told that the clearance for my gas stove isn't far enough from the cabinets on either side of the range hood. I'm thinking of switching to an electric stove since I already have a built-in electric oven. Just wondering if there’s anything I should keep in mind when choosing between electric or induction? Thanks a lot!

You need to know first that your electric panel is capable for having more 40 amp stove on its load or not.
The other thing is the distance between your panel and the kitchen and how to run a wire for that.

When switching from a gas cooktop to an electric or induction one, there are two main things to check:
1. Electrical requirements:
Most electric/induction cooktops require a 240V / 40–50A dedicated circuit.
Your panel must have enough capacity and an available breaker space.
If no 240V line is present, you’ll need to run a new cable from the panel.
2. Clearances and cabinet safety:
Electric and induction units usually have less strict side-cabinet clearances compared to gas, so it often solves cabinet-spacing issues.
Induction vs electric:
• Induction heats faster, is more energy-efficient, and keeps the surface cooler.
• Electric is less expensive and works with any cookware.
• Induction requires magnetic cookware to work (steel, cast iron).
If you already have a built-in electric oven, upgrading the cooktop is usually straightforward as long as the electrical circuit is suitable.
