Great question! Swapping out a downdraft stove for a regular range involves a few key steps: disconnecting and capping the downdraft ventilation (which typically runs through the floor or cabinet), patching or repurposing that duct, and ensuring the gas or electrical connection matches your new appliance. Depending on your kitchen layout, you may also need some cabinetry adjustments to fill the void left by the downdraft system. It's a straightforward project for an experienced kitchen contractor.

To replace a downdraft stove, you must pull out the old unit, permanently seal the under-floor exhaust pipe with a galvanized metal duct cap, and install a new overhead range hood to handle kitchen smoke and grease. Because standard stoves vent upward, you will need to run a new duct line through your ceiling or wall to the outside of your home.
