Like many things, it all depends. Rental hot water tanks are great if you don't have the money upfront to pay for a new tank, you want total peace of mind in the event there is an issue or you're a landlord and want to write-off the monthly payment. The main benefit is point two - total peace of mind that if something were to happen you are covered and a tech will be buy to fix the tank ASAP. Hope this helps.

If you have hard water, I would strongly suggest that you get a softner system installed at same time as well. (Or else if you dont, manufacturer may void warranty). And I would suggest to buy it right it if you can afford it. If you rent, you will end up paying for the unit 3 times and at the end if you wanted to keep it, you would need to pay an additional fee to keep the unit. Typically another $2000.

Purchasing the equipment outright is generally the most cost-effective option, provided it fits within your budget. While the upfront investment is higher, you’ll benefit immediately from lower monthly utility costs—especially if you’re not on a fixed rate. Financing through third-party programs may seem appealing due to the lower monthly payments, but these plans often extend over a long term and can result in paying significantly more overall—sometimes several times the original cost. If upfront cost is a concern, a better alternative is to work with a reputable plumbing company that offers flexible, short-term payment options. While the monthly cost may be slightly higher, you avoid long-term commitments and reduce the total amount paid over time.
