Can I lay sod on top of gravel?
Anonymous user 30/06/2026 - 9:12 AM
My yard is covered with 3/4 inch stones and gravel but I'm hoping to turn it into a nice grassy area. Can I just put some topsoil and lay down grass over the gravel or do I need to get rid of the gravel first to prepare the soil before laying the grass? Any advice? Thanks!

No, laying sod directly on gravel is not recommended it won’t grow properly because the roots won’t get enough nutrients, moisture, or stability.

You cannot lay soil over the gravel because the rocks will block grass roots from growing deep, drain away water too quickly, and bake the soil during the summer, killing your new lawn. To grow healthy grass, you must shovel or scrape away the 3/4-inch stones down to the native dirt layer and loosen the hard soil underneath. Once the gravel is removed, add a rich 10 to 15 cm layer of premium topsoil to give your new seed or sod a lasting foundation.
