How do I prevent my front door from locking on its own?

Anonymous user 23/10/2026 - 10:12 AM

I have a front door that locks automatically from the outside, and I’d like to change it so it doesn’t do that. I’ve locked myself out a few times already! Can someone advise what part I need to replace? Just to clarify, the door has a handle with a twist lock on the inside, and it uses multipoint locking with bolts at the top and bottom. When I close the door, it can’t be opened from outside. If I lift the handle from the inside, the bolts pop out. Should I replace the handle, the cylinder, or the lockset to prevent it from self-locking?

That one's usually not the cylinder. With those multipoint locks, the self-locking part is in the main lock in the middle of the door. Some of them have a little button that holds it from locking — check for that first. If yours doesn't have it, a locksmith can change the lock case to one that only locks when you lift the handle and turn the key. Just changing the handle won't fix it, I've run into this before.
