To ensure proper drainage and prevent basement flooding, you should use clean, washed, angular crushed stone rather than river rock or pea gravel, as angular stones interlock better and offer superior stability for drainage voids. Recommended Specifications
Rock Size: Ideally 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches (or roughly 14–20mm). This size allows water to percolate rapidly while remaining large enough to prevent clogging with debris.
Depth: You should aim for a layer 6 to 12 inches deep at the bottom of the well. Ensure the top of this gravel layer remains at least 6 inches below the bottom sill of your basement window.

Pea gravel provides excellent drainage but may shift over time, while crushed stone offers better stability but less optimal water flow. 6 to 10 inches on each window should be good

3/4” clear washed gravel is the best choice for window wells because it drains well and doesn’t trap water. The quantity depends on the size of the window wells.

Hi Jason! I do window well gravel filling.
For 3 window wells, you'll typically need about 0.5 - 0.75 cubic yards
of 3/4" washed gravel or river rock. That helps with drainage and
prevents debris from falling in.
