Drain flies breed in the organic buildup inside drains, so the key is to remove the breeding material rather than simply killing the adult flies. Start by identifying the affected drain. A clear cup or piece of tape placed loosely over the drain overnight can help confirm where they are emerging. Remove the drain cover, where possible, and thoroughly scrub the inside of the drain, the underside of the cover, the overflow opening and any accessible edges using a small dish brush or narrow wire brush. The goal is to physically remove the slimy organic film where the larvae live. After scrubbing, a biological or enzyme-based drain treatment can help break down buildup farther inside the plumbing.
