It can depend on the size of area you are trying to measure but majority of the time in residential settings a tape measure is the best method taking your measurements in feet. Applying the area formula (width x length = area). After calculating a total square foot area adding an additional 10 percent for material is a very common practise to account for waste and cut off pieces.

For measuring square footage indoors to replace flooring, the laser measurement tool is by far the best choice. It is fast, highly accurate, easy to use alone, and most models calculate the total square footage automatically.
A traditional measuring tape is a good backup for narrow spaces, closets, or small details, but it can be awkward to measure large rooms by yourself. A measuring wheel should be avoided for indoor flooring because it cannot reach into corners or around baseboards, leading to inaccurate measurements.
When buying flooring materials, always measure the room area and add 10% extra to account for cuts, angles, and waste during installation.
