What is the best way to wallpaper over fresh drywall?

Anonymous user 26/02/2026 - 8:48 AM

Hi, we've just had our living room re-plastered, going back to the brick before bonding and skimming. We're looking to put wallpaper on the walls and want to know the correct process for doing this. Also, the ceiling has new drywall installed and skimmed over and we're planning to paint it. What steps should we follow? Thanks

On new dry wall and plaster you have to prime the drywall with drywall primer before you put the paper up otherwise it will not stick Then make sure you sand after its dried and give the wal a light dusting before you put the paper on.

A good primer should be used to seal up the walls and ceilings. I recommend Sherwin Williams multi purpose

Definitely prime your ceilings, and put two coats of finish paint over them. I would go to Sherwin williams or dulux and pickup paint and primer there. Wallpaper can be tricky, and it will not last as long as good paint and primer, it will cost more to repair in the future if not installed properly or also if it begins to bubbles or flake off. Personally I would avoid wallpaper but if it’s what you want I would recommend getting a professional to install it. Give me a call or send me a message over homestars and I can come take a look for you. Happy thanksgiving

Visit your local Sherwin-Williams store and purchase, Roman PRO-977 Ultra Prime Pigmented Wallcovering Primer, gor your walls to receive your new wallcovering, and ask for PVA primer for your ceilings and finish top coat with the 400 flat 2 coats. Do you research on the Wallcovering you’ve chosen and find out if the Pro 977 primer needs to be tinted to a certain colour before applying your Wallcovering. Good luck with your project.
