Buyer Beware!

We chose Knox based on all of the great HomeStars reviews, but our experience did not match the rating!
Knox insulate our attic to R50, weather stripped attic hatch door and installed an insulated exhaust fan hose for $800.
A year later, when water started dripping from the fan into the bathroom, an attic inspection revealed a faulty exhaust fan hose, mold that was forming around it and the insulation that was blown in blocked our soffits and didn’t make it all the way to the corners of our home.
Knox came back and quoted $850 (more than the work originally done) to re-install the exhaust fan, install new vents for adequate ventilation and kill the mold with some chemical spray.
The crew came, but they didn’t install the required vents or spray the mold. They insisted on payment in full and would send another crew back to install the vents – needless to say they never came back.
After much debate with the owner (Kent), I was reimbursed $200. The owner told me to ignore the problem, weather strip the attic hatch (which I paid them to do a year ago) and that I was being paranoid about the mold (because I’m pregnant) and I was lucky that I didn’t get screwed out of more money. He also told me that there was nothing I could do and he wasn’t afraid of the Better Business Bureau.
Look at the pictures and you be the judge. Since when is it safe to ignore black mold?

Company Response

This person was impossible to deal with. She is confused about the service we provided. We sent her a refund & lost money on the job. They bought a home with moisture problems & we fixed the problem. I called & assured her not to worry. She is pregnant & paranoid about mold,I told her they should seal the attic hatch if she is still unable to rest her mind.

Attic Insulation

I finally got around to a job I've put off for way too long after this horrible winter. Kent called me back within a couple hours of getting in touch with Knox.
The quote for the work was very reasonable and Kyle came to perform the work the very next day. The team was very courteous, let me know when they were due to arrive, completed the work quickly and with minimum disruption. Very happy with all at Knox Insulation & Roofing and I would highly recommend them. I am looking forward to a warmer house (especially the bathroom) and lower gas bills!

Attic Insulation

This Spring I was referred to Knox Insulation and Roofing. My referral came from a roofer who did our home late last fall. Kent Knox has been in the industry for many years and certainly knows what he is talking about. He came to the house for an inspection, explained to me what I should do...didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need and wet above my expectations. Kyle and Nick arrived the day of, right on time. They were very friendly, professional, took pictures in the attic for us to see. Even taped up the bathroom vents for me. Kyle and Nick work great as a team, and once the job was completed, you would never know they were in the house..drop clothes were put down, vacuumed the floors before leaving, house was cleaner then when they arrived :). I went up to look at the attic before we sealed the trap, what a difference R60 makes. I plan on calling Knox back in the fall to insulate my Garage!! Highly Recommend Knox Insulation and Roofing!

new roof

had Knox Roofing put on a new roof 1.5 years ago, had a minor leak afterwards by our bay window, Kent sent someone out and I was told it was due to our eavstroughs being full. now 1.5 years later, I have several leaks in my bedroom. I called Kent, he sent someone out once and said it was due to ice build up, which they did take ice off my roof, but the same evening after the ice was taken off the ceiling in my bedroom still leaked, even worse then before. called Kent back only to be told that he did not create ice storms, rain storms, or snow storms, this was not his problem and I shouldnt be blaming him for it. after sending him picture of my bedroom ceiling thru email and stating I would be taking legal action he replied thru email that he would send someone out when the weather breaks. not to sure just what that is supposed to mean, we've had nice days since this email on Feb 26/14 but still havent seen anyone come buy yet. I've emailed him twice more to which I have had no reply at all.

REPLY TO KENT KNOX:

I think you need to get your facts straight, I did not and have not called my insurance company regarding this issue because your work is supposed to be under warranty, so saying I called them and they told me I wasnt covered is FALSE. also I have no idea who JD Trundel is. you did not tell me I have to remove the ice and snow off my roof, when I first talked to you I explained that we wanted a new roof with extra ice and water shield so my husband did not have to go up there every winter to shovel, you told me that this would solve that problem, regardless we still put up heater cords on the roof to melt the ice and snow and they were working thru the winter months. in one phone conversation you said that you had received many calls about leaks after the storm, leads me to think its your work that is a problem, since there are at least 4 other houses on my street that had a new roof installed (not by Knox) and none of them have had a problem, even after the ice storms and they also have low slopes and very mature trees on their property. all I want is to have the roof leak fixed and the damages to my bedroom ceiling fixed because of the leaks.

Mrs Dickson has a continuing problem with ice dams every year because the back side for the house is covered in trees. When work was completed she was informed that every year she must clear away the ice & the trees should be cut down This year she did nothing to prevent the ice dams. The ice storm that hit the GTA this year caused water damage to thousands of homes. Her Insurance informed her that she was not covered for ice dams so now she is trying to get us to pay for damages. We were over to her house And cleared ice a foot thick from her roof. The water has been stopped. Some of the work was preformed by J Trudell roofing she has no claim against us. We tried to help her but she ignored our advice She is very confused & looking for someone to blame Kent Knox . .

Insulation attic to R50

I would highly recommend Knox Insulation. This is the 2nd time I have used this company and have found them wonderful to deal with. They are on time, efficient, do an excellent job and did all of the little "extras" that the other company quotes did not offer or suggest, let alone include. They also cleaned everything up as if they had not even been there. A wonderful family business with the very best of service. Thank you Kent and Kyle and Les. Dianne

Attic insulation

Just before the "polar Vortex" took over, I was in need of topping up my attic insulation. I called Knox Insulation and spoke with Kent, who, fortuitously, was doing a job in my area. He arrived and we discussed what needed to be done. Kent was very forthcoming with the necessary information, what needed to be done, as well as a couple small items he would look into-and take care of-when the job was agreed upon. His pricing was fair, and after a failed attempt to make the first appointment-blame Mother Nature! - His son-Kyle-arrived on time and took care of everything previously discussed. The job was completed very quickly, whatever mess there was-and it was minimal-was cleaned up before he left. I received a full explanation of the materials that were used, and the benefits I should expect to receive through them. He even re-routed my bathroom exhaust vent, and let me ask as many questions, and be as nosy as I wanted while he and his partner were working away. I was able to see what was being sprayed into the attic, and was surprised at the amount that was being added!
I would definitely recommend Knox Insulation. Kent and Kyle did what was needed at a price I was comfortable with.

Party wall insulation

Kent was responsive and did a great job at our 1890s Cabbagetown semi. He insulated our shared party wall more quickly, and with less mess, than anticipated. No damage to plaster! Seems to be a family business. They made it down our tiny mews street with no problem.

My neighbour and I split the cost...at $750 per house, it's well worth it. We were skeptical at how effective blow-in would stop noise but it is working much better than expected.

Attic Insulation

We asked Knox Insulation & Roofing to insulate our ~1920's semi-detached North Toronto home. They were in and out in under 2hrs and did a clean, friendly, professional job installing Canadian made, Eco-friendly cellulose. We noticed a major difference in our upstairs temperature, almost immediately. Many thanks Knox!
