Bathroom Exhaust Fan

Good morning. I hired an electrician through Homestars to repair/.replace an exhaust fan in one of our bathrooms. The company the electrician worked for is named Langstaff & Sloan Inc. Rob, who I assume is the owner, contacted me very quickly after I posted the job on Homestars so I was very happy to see that and agreed to retain his company to do the work. When the job was completed I was presented with a bill for $440.70 the actual part cost $75.00 and the rest were additional charges. I contacted Rob and asked about these extra charges and he explained that they were consistent with other jobs they do. When I had the initial conversation with Rob he did not advise me of any of these charges or the fact that, what I considered to be a small job, was going cost me almost $450.00. Had I known this, I never would have proceeded or I would have made other inquiries. I accept some of the responsibility for not asking the right questions of Rob but he has a responsibility to explain the fact that these extra charges will be applied. Rob offered to take $50.00 off the invoice which I appreciated but it doesnt take away from the fact that I feel I have grossly overpaid for this project. I used Homestars because I thought that the companies they put forward were reputable and I suppose that it was for this reason that I had my guard down. I am deeply disappointed with the service and I wont use Homestars again and I certainly wont recommend Homestars to any of my family and friends.

Approximate cost of services:
$450.00

Company Response

You have indicated you have "grossly overpaid" when in fact you still have not paid anything. Your inquiry was for a ceiling fan repair or replacement. After speaking with you for a few minutes I realized you meant a bathroom exhaust fan. After explaining the pros and cons of replacement versus repair you chose repair. I explained that it would take 2 visits or that we could show you how to remove the motor assembly yourself as most exhaust fans are very repair friendly and require periodic cleaning. We charged you 1 truck charge of $105 (not 2) and 2 hours of labour at $105 per hour and $75 for a new assembly which we had to drive to Kipling and Bloor to obtain after a few calls and internet inquiries elsewhere. The total bill was $390 + HST = $440.70. When you complained I offered you a $50 + HST = $56.50 discount. This was in the spirit of Christmas not because you deserved it. You indicated you would pay the bill. Next you slandered us on Google. I have asked that you check with others in hopes that you would realize how fair this bill is since you seem to feel that only labour spent removing or installing is chargeable. Currently you have slandered myself, my company and Homestars.
Merry Christmas
