Renovation drawings insufficient

The March 11, 2010 review of RHI entitled 'Engineering work', written by Douglas in Toronto rings true. I chose Royal Home Improvements as the general contractor for my renovation based on their Renomark and NKBA certifications. As a starting point, I agreed to pay for a set of permit ready drawings and an engineer's specification for a beam to
replace a load bearing wall. I'm ashamed to admit what I paid, especially considering that the drawings I was subsequently given weren't permit ready (as per the Etobicoke permit office). When asked for a quote on the entire renovation Paul N. named a (in my opinion) staggering sum without providing any details as to how the number was arrived at. Overall, I was left with the impression that his primary interest was making money rather than ensuring his client was satisfied. In hindsightI wish I had read RHI's HomeStars reviews before doing business with them. Their track record seems hit and miss.
Avoid RHI!

Approximate cost of services:
$5,000.00
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Use someone other than RHI as your general contractor.

Company Response

We maintain a full and complete record of all our clients (as any reputable business does), and review of that list from the last 3 years shows no matches for anyone named Frank, living in Etobicoke who purchased permit ready drawings and engineering services from us. Given this, we can't respond and question the authenticity of the post. Any time we sell "permit ready" drawings, we guarantee they will be sufficient to get a permit, and the accompanying engineer's stamp is ordinarily more than enough. Particularly amazed at the advice the poster offers to others as he/she (purportedly) never used us as their General Contractor either. Suspiciuous post from the cheap seats.
