Lost $11,000 and have a destroyed backyard

The most important thing to keep in mind while reading this review is that the quality of work provided by Joe and Canadian Pro Interlocking is abysmal. They dID not use any machines for digging. They did not get rid of any materials using bins. They did not know how to lay the stone properly. They do not do any edging and your stones will start moving the minute they are laid down. They do not own any vehicles and will show up in UHAUL van to your house. I have lost a total of $11,000 which does not include me paying someone to fix the disaster this company has created in my backyard. This is just the money he owes me because he never finished the work.

Red Flags:
1. Business address provided on the contract is the address of the Shoppers Drugmart in Brampton and not a legitimate office.
2. Business address provide on BBB is not recognizable by Google Maps.
3. Drives a rental UHaul truck instead of a company vehicle.
4. Demands that all money be given upfront and will not pay for any materials.

Please read this review in entirety if you want to save your family years of torture and financial catastrophe.

We signed the contract on July 21st 2019 with Canadian Pro Interlocking. The project was divided into two phases. Phase I was $22,000 for the backyard and Phase II was $12,000 for the front. The backyard took over 400 days to finish. The front yard was never finished. Joe promised to refund the remaining amount but has refused to do so for the past 6 months.
Deadline Number 1 given: 1 week. Verbal deadline.
Deadline Number 2 given: September 25th, 2019 in writing
Deadline Number 3 given: May 31st 2020
More deadlines were provided but never met.

The contract was to lay stones in the backyard and the front of the house. It also included demolishing the concrete we have in the front yard. Joe showed up about 5 times, did work for about 3 to 4 hours at a time and laid some stone in the backyard. What I did not understand at the time was he was only coming to get the money from me. He took 93% of the cost upfront during those 5 visits because that is how the contract is designed. I also paid $7200 for the stone out of my own pocket. He does not pay for the material because someone did not pay him for some material in the past. He did say that he will pay if any extra material is needed. Joe was recommended by someone I thought I could trust. Turns out he only gave the reference because Joe promised him some free work. Once Joe had all the money he simply disappeared. He promised repeatedly that he will show up but to no avail.

The stone sat on our front lawn for 5 months destroying our grass. It was in December that I moved all the stone in the backyard. He joked about me building muscles by moving all that stone. In addition, the skids that came for the stone are still sitting in my garage. I had to move everything to the backyard because people driving by thought that it was there for the taking and I caught two before they took off with it.
There was complete radio silence until 1 message in January telling me that he will start the work as soon as possible. May came and according to the law, the home projects already in progress were to be finished and COVID 19 had no impact on it. He came over on May 12th, spent 15 minutes measuring the backyard (although it’s not clear why that had to be done because he had already taken the measurements at the beginning of the project) and promised me that he will order the additional materials which per the contract had to be payed for by him. He then told me multiple times that he will have the stones delivered. After reminding him again about the legal action and reviews, he delivered $900 worth of material. $4000 worth of material was needed to get the job finished. On May 25th, I sat with a completely destroyed backyard and no end in site from this nightmare company.

I then told Joe that I will have to take legal action and post reviews for this business. I had to do this about 10 times and each time his people showed up for 1 to 3 hours every 3 to 4 weeks to a little bit of work. The back yard was finally finished in October of 2020. Please keep in mind that the work began in July of 2019. They also put in wet polymeric sand and all the stones moved within a month. I then told them about taking legal action. They still did not fix the issue, only added new sand on the top and half my stones have old wet polymeric sand in them.
He will not answer his phone when you call him. He will go on complete radio silence for days and will not reply to any of your messages. He is quick to anger and will threaten you with a lawsuit if you demand that he completes the work that he promised. He told me that he doesn’t care about my review ( in writing). That by the time, I leave one review, he would have other positive reviews left on the site by other people (real or fake, I do not know) and it would be too late.

According to him he has 365 days to complete the work. In Ontario law, work must be finished within 30 days of a deadline given. He has breached the contract he touts multiple times.

I will bring legal action against him because I have no other option left to recuperate $11,350. Please save yourself heartache and months of misery and tension and hire someone who is honest and reliable.
