He demanded we to pay upfront 1000$ which we did and we signed a contract that the deck will be done in 4 weeks at the latest. He was coming for two hours a day during lunch time and then Saturdays and Sundays all day with one male, who was actually and his driver as Devon did not have his own vehicle. He did not finish work in those 4 weeks but was demanding money or will report me to the police. I paid him 3,500 total and that is way too much as holes in the concrete were placed the wrong way and the wood was too low, with no space for any storage underneath a 1-meter high deck.. Later I found that he is actually a professional poker player.

Devon built a deck for me, and as has been said he was very charming, price was good until the work began and I he continuously asked for more money to buy materials. He would say he was coming and then not show, no messages. I was lucky he finished the job as I had paid almost all of the cost before completion. The work is ok but now needs repair after 2 years. My big mistake was receding him to a neighbor, he took all of her money- she made the mistake of trusting him and falling for his financial need, started the job poorly and never returned. Nothing she could do. If you hear from him for a job, run.

Do NOT do business with Devon. We experienced all issues found in negative reviews. Didn't complete the work on schedule. Took money and didn't finish parts of the project. Worked a couple of hour, then disappeared. Had no idea to how fix bathroom plumbing and install a bathtub. Fired him and now suing him.

We had our basement gutted and re finished by Mr. Morgan and his crew. Excellent experience from start to finish. Pricing was very reasonable and all expectations were exceeded. We will be using the same team for our next renovation.

I wish I'd done more research... he can overextend himself which means the job takes much longer than it should. He needs to be better organized and held to timelines.

BEWARE!

Devon seems charming, friendly and good-natured when you first meet him. Do not be fooled.

Devon has done business under several business names over the past number of years. As of early 2020, he was located in the Beaches neighbourhood in Toronto, doing business as Morgan Builders / Morgan Builders GTA. By the time you’re reading this, there is a good chance he will be working in another city or under another name.

Some observations while having Devon do some work for me:
-Staff is hired using Kijiji, usually with no experience, and do not stick around for more than a week or two. Some of his staff were very open about the fact that Devon didn’t consistently pay them.
-Takes shortcuts and 'creatively' cuts corners. For example, he would do the work despite knowing that other electrical or plumbing needed to be done first, then charge extra when revisions had to be made. Work was generally sloppy. I had to rip out his work and redo the job myself.
-Shows up late or not at all. Works 3 - 4 hours a day, checks out early. Jobs consistently take days or weeks longer than promised. Has an excuse every time.
-Does not have a vehicle or tools. Depends on his staff’s personal vehicle for access to transportation and uses homeowner’s tools.
-Provides 'back of the napkin' costing and provides no invoice for material or services, leaving you no records in the event of future complaints.
-Requests payment up front for material purchases, then disappeared without delivery of the materials or completion of the job, leaving homeowner out of their time and money.

Don't just take my word for this guy. Do your own research and check out online reviews for other companies that he has previously owned.

Learn from my mistake. Do yourself a favour and stay far away from this man.
