How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Mason?

The cost of a mason can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, the experience of the bricklayer, and your location.

Bricklayer costs per square metre: The average cost typically ranges from $70 to $140 per square metre, including materials (bricks and mortar) and labour. This usually applies to standard, straight walls without many corners or special features.

Hourly rate for a mason: Some masons prefer to charge by the hour, with rates generally between $35 and $65 per hour.

What to Ask Before You Hire a Mason Near You

Before hiring a mason, it’s worth taking a moment to ask the right questions. From experience and pricing to the scope of work, knowing what to look for helps you make an informed decision — and ensures you get the most value from your masonry services.

Here are some essential questions to ask when choosing a mason:

What masonry services do you offer?

Not every mason handles the same range of tasks. Some specialise in brickwork, while others focus on stone, block, or restoration projects. Services may include building walls, patios, chimneys, foundations, garden features, or repairing and repointing existing structures.

Are you insured?

It can be beneficial to work with someone who carries public liability insurance. This protects both you and the mason in case of accidental damage or injury during the job. Don’t hesitate to ask about their experience and how long they’ve been working in the trade.

What are your rates, and how are they structured?

Rates may vary depending on the job size, complexity, and location. Some masons charge an hourly rate, while others quote a fixed price for specific work, such as building a wall or restoring a chimney.

Be sure to ask:

  • Is there a minimum job size or fee?

  • Are there extra charges for complex or custom work?

What preparation work is included?

Before laying any bricks, blocks, or stones, proper preparation is essential for a solid and long-lasting result. Ask your mason what preparation tasks they include — this could involve clearing the site, removing old materials, grading the ground, or installing a stable foundation or base. Knowing exactly what’s included helps you plan ahead and avoid unexpected costs or delays.

Do you handle clean-up after the project?

Masonry work can create dust, debris, and leftover materials. Some masons include full clean-up in their service, while others may leave rubble for you to manage. Clarify this upfront to ensure your property is left tidy and safe once the project is complete.
