    Drain clearing

Basement shower drain and toilet clogged continuely. Called and a tech was onsite to provide options to work to resolve. Snakin clear a large mass of non flushable wipes.... Who knew! Only callout was the empowerment towards the consumer around this 'may not' resolve the problem and you 'can't come back and ask for a refund' if it continues. My guess is, the legal team is as big as their marketing team.

    Answer from pro:

Hello mduench, we’re glad you appreciated the service we provided you of a snaking of your drain at $175+hst ($300 stated for some reason?). Regarding the “non flushable” wipes, we definitely don’t advise on continuing to flush them, as they are “non flushable” and will cause you to backup again. Hopefully, in the future, a real biodegradable wipe will be made. However, as we can’t control or warranty against “non flushable” wipes being put in a drain, we always ensure that our customers have all the facts surrounding their problems and our recommendations, now, and in the future. We’re an independent, family owned business that has decades of experience in the field. Our longevity with long time staff is what allows us to be as efficient and detail oriented as we are. Thank you for your patronage and for taking the time to give us feedback; we certainly appreciate it. Have a great weekend.

    Main drain snaking

I recently had Lou from DrainWorks over to snake our main drain. We had sewage in our basement one hour before a dinner party. Needless to say, we were stressed! His calm, straightforward manner and efficient work got the line cleared quickly. He gave us all our options, with no pressure. Highly recommended.

    Replace shower faucet

The good: - they were on time. - they have bootie covers. - they call the day before to confirm the visit. - polite and professional. The bad: - $70 + HST for the visit/quote. - $190/hr standard rate. (!!!) - fellow who visited reeked of smoke. I had asked the fellow I spoke to on the phone to give me a ballpark figure of how much they usually charge for this kind of work. (It is after all a pretty standard thing: replacing the shower faucet. Plus we have access to the back of the shower, via the linen closet.) He said they never give estimates over the phone without seeing the situation in person. Fair enough. But, I should have asked what their standard rate was. As it turns out it's $190/hr. (Snarky commented about Harvard redacted by author.) Plus they charge $80 ($77.97 incl HST) for the visit. That would have been included in the $725 + HST which he quoted me. ON seeing the very high quote, I directly contacted a friend to discuss. He agreed it was _outrageous_. So I told the fellow we'd pass. Which is when he informed me if I changed my mind later the $80 would not be included in the quote. All in all, in my opinion, this company does not price its services fairly, and I would STRONGLY recommend against hiring them, or even spending (wasting) time looking at their services.

    Answer from pro:

Alfred. It is unfortunate you feel this way. When calling our office, you were made aware that pricing is not given over the phone, and you were made aware of $69 + hst to have a plumber sent to your home to assess and quote, at which point you could decide if you wanted to proceed or not, and that if proceeding on the spot the assessment fee would be applied. This was all explained upfront and you agreed to book the appointment with these terms. It seems puzzling to complain now about this charge; we followed through exactly as we said we would, no surprises. It is also important to note that the quote given was a flat rate price, not an hourly one, as the price is not dependant on the time required. The job could take 3 hours or 6 hours, and you’d still pay what you agreed to upfront. It is displeasing that our quote was not to your liking, but it is in line with industry standards, and would have been the same for all of customers; many of which have proceeded with the same work and left positive reviews about the service. We cannot comment on prices given by unqualified friends or other outfits, we can only stand true to operate as we say we will, upfront and transparent.

    Water service and sewer replacement

I had this company come over around 8 years ago to replace a leaking water pipe under the driveway. I noticed this because there was a little depression in the drive way. They came over right away and gave me a quote. The quote involved using a torpedo to push a new water line for the city service to the house. While here I expressed concerns that the water eroded a cavity and that the water service pipe would be unsupported and that any additional soil erosion or sinking might damage the new line. I was told that this would not be an issue. I have noticed that the driveway continues to sink and there is serious risk of the new water line being damaged. I would have expected the “experts” to recommend a trenching approach to replace the water line instead of a torpedo because there is no way to determine how much erosion happened. It would have been more expensive up front, but it is the right way to deal with this situation. I have called other experts and they confirmed that a torpedo in this scenario is not the right way. So a word of caution to anyone that has this issue. I strongly recommend that you insist on trenching instead of a torpedo .

    Answer from pro:

Eric, you called DrainWorks 7 years ago to replace your water service because the city said it was leaking causing your driveway to sink. We were never hired to deal with any sinking issues, nor do we, nor did we ever give the impression that we would. Our contract specifically states that we were hired to replace the water service only, and you signed off on the contract at the completion as being totally satisfied with our service. On our first meet, you were given options to replace the water service, including excavating and trenching. It was your choice to proceed with the cheapest option, the torpedo method. It is not true that excavating and trenching was never offered. We have nothing to gain by not excavating and trenching. We do it all the time and it is more expensive. It is the homeowner’s choice for what suits their budget best. When making contact with us on April 4th, 2016, you admitted to hoping that the sinking issue would have gone away after the water service was replaced, so we can only assume you choose the torpedo method to not incur any of the added costs associated with excavating and trenching or replacing your driveway or dealing with the sinking issue. The sinking was an issue 7 years ago, and still is, because it has never been dealt with. DrainWorks’ responsibility is to our water service, and that is not leaking. DrainWorks is not responsible for the existing/remaining sinking issue or the ramifications of it. We value being able to offer options to our customers and in the end it is always up to our customers to authorize which way they want to proceed.

    Sewage line replacement

I was experiencing a sewage smell in my basement. I contacted Drainworks to come and inspect the line. After an inspection and a snaking it was pretty clear we had a serious blockage in the sewer line just external to the house. After receiving a clear and detailed quote, the Drainworks team came into do an inspection and replacement dig at the problem area of the line. The crew removed a section of my concrete walkway, dug an 8 foot deep hole, replaced 5 feet of blocked line, put in new sewer clean out lines, filled the hole and completely cleaned the site...all work completed in nine hours! The technician returned the next day to do a follow up inspection and answer any questions. The team was great, including Matt who did the initial and Final inspections, the crew who did the dig, and Frank & Armando who supported the dig and clearly articulated the decision points and the pros and cons of each option we had. Thanks guys!

    Jim from DrainWorks is Amazing

Easter long weekend and they actually answer the phone! Most other plumbing companies cannot be reached after hours. Jim was the plumber that came by in less than 15 minutes, he snaked the drain, several times and was constantly checking to make sure my kitchen sink was in tip top shape. He was very thorough and is an honest reliable person, and he explained everything to me. I asked so many questions, and he was so patient. I will definitely continue to work with DrainWorks and I will make sure to always ask for Jim! Highly recommended! He provided a very detailed invoice and I was able to pay by debit. Excellent work.

    Root of the problem...

Had water backing up in basement bathroom so I snaked the drain and pulled out some roots. As soon as I saw that, I did an on line search and found Drain Works with many positive recommendations, so called them on a Thursday afternoon. We discussed the problem, which was not at that point an emergency, so we booked an appointment for Friday morning to do a camera inspection to identify the problem. Friday morning Armando arrived on time and with his assistant (sorry, I forgot his name) they were able to assess the entire drain system, identify not just the one root mass causing the backup, but 6 locations from the bathroom to the city line with root infiltration! Armando showed me the entire line on the monitor and we discussed the required work. He was very helpful in providing quotes on the spot for the minimum required repairs, an extended project to replace all the floor drains (old clay pipe under the concrete) and we discussed replacing the entire drain outside and the installation of the backwater valve. I booked the appointment for the required repairs, with the possibility of doing more work, as I had to discuss with the family. Armando said that was fine, just let him know Monday morning if I decided to do more. First thing Monday morning the crew arrived to start and I told Armando we would do the entire project. Inside, outside, valve. He wrote up the expanded quote and the crew got to work. Each morning of this project Frank was on site to oversee the work and discuss the day's activities with me. He also provided me with his cell phone number should I need to contact him any time. Wednesday they were finished the entire job! New concrete floor, entire new drain system including proper floor drain, drains for water tank, air conditioner, cleanouts for main line and the backwater valve. Armando was just here to review the clean up work, show me the final camera inspection of the entire system and demonstrate how to service the backwater valve. The entire process was amazingly smooth and very easy to follow. The crew did a wonderful job inside and out, from start to final cleaning! I can't say how happy we all are with this work. Drain Works will be the Go To company should we ever need future work, or know some one who needs plumbing work! Thank you Armando, Frank, William and all who was on site working!

    Clear blocked toilet

I could not unblock one toilet. I called for service , was offered appointment in one hour. I was called when they were on their way and a friendly plumber and aprrentice arrived. I was told of the price range for the service up front over the phone - not like competitor who only promised estimate with a cost of inspection if service declined . I got an efficienct job done in 45 minutes but the cost of my child's partially eaten and now expensive apple will be a fond memory for the future

    90 years of tree roots

I have 6 huge Oak trees that have been causing havoc on my drainage system for years. Drainworks has helped my out over the years but I had to face the inevitable. Absolutely thrilled with the job done by Armando and his team. Its reassuring to flush the toilet and not have to worry whether it's going to end up in the basement. It was a big job that I was dreading but I was assured all along the way. They were extremely tidy considering the entire system was dug up and all of the sandy soil was contained. Thanks.
