Different Toronto plumbing job types and costs
Facing a sudden blocked drain, leaky tap, or planning a bathroom refit?
Toronto plumbing costs vary widely, so knowing the costs for different plumbing jobs can give you a better picture than just hourly plumber rates alone.
Common plumbing repair costs
Plumbing issues crop up all the time. For example, if your toilet runs constantly, leaks, or won’t flush properly, it’s best to call a professional rather than attempt complex DIY fixes.
Take a look at some common plumbing jobs and their costs:
| Task | Average Cost |
|---|---|
| Sink Unclogging | $200 |
| Toilet Repair | $350 |
| Water Heater Replacement | $1,800 |
| Blocked Drain | $1,300 |
| Fix a Leak | $450 |
| Repair Lead Pipes | $3,000 |
| Sewer Backup Valve | $6,000 |
Major repairs, like a complete drain replacement, extensive leak remediation, or full sewer backup valve installation, can push costs well beyond average amounts.
In Toronto, burst pipes are common during freezing winter temperatures when water expands inside the pipes. Burst pipe repair in Toronto typically costs between $450 and $1,500, with additional costs if drywall or flooring needs restoration. You can learn more about the costs you can expect in our burst pipe repair cost guide.
Common plumbing installation jobs and costs
Plumbing installations, like fitting a new faucet or upgrading your entire bathroom, tend to cost a bit more than repairs. They require extra upfront planning, specialized tools, and often structural tweaks.
Knowing the costs for common bathroom installation jobs can help you budget smarter and pick the right pro for the job.

Additional plumber costs to avoid
Sometimes plumbing costs come up that can’t be itemized in an initial quote, and unexpected issues can become expensive quickly. Knowing some of the more common issues that can arise in Toronto can help plan repairs efficiently and prevent unnecessary charges.
Diagnostic fees without repair
Some visits charge $75 to $150 just to assess the issue without completing any work. Confirming whether the fee is applied to the final invoice helps avoid paying twice.
Rework from poor installations
Incorrect pipe fitting or improper sealing can lead to leaks and repeat visits. Fixing these issues later can double the original cost, often reaching $500 to $2,000 depending on damage.
Ignoring minor leaks
Small leaks can increase water bills and cause structural damage over time. A $150 repair can turn into several thousand dollars if mould removal or drywall replacement becomes necessary.
Permit and inspection fees
Certain plumbing projects in Toronto require city permits and inspections, which can add $100 to $500 or more. Skipping this step can result in fines or mandatory rework, increasing overall costs.
Emergency plumber costs in Toronto
Plumbing emergencies can happen when you least expect them, a burst pipe in the middle of the night, a flooded basement, or a blocked sewer line.
In these situations, having an emergency plumber available can prevent further damage.
- In Toronto, emergency plumbing services typically cost between $160 and $180 per hour, depending on the time, location, and severity of the issue.
- Some companies may also charge a call-out fee of $150 - $200 for immediate responses outside regular business hours.

Common questions about plumber costs Toronto
How can I estimate the cost of my plumbing project in Toronto?
The best way to estimate cost is to outline your specific plumbing needs , such as replacing a faucet, installing a new fixture, or repairing a burst pipe, and request a few quotes from verified Toronto plumbers. Comparing multiple estimates helps you understand average pricing for your area.
Are emergency plumbing services more expensive?
Yes. Emergency or 24-hour plumbing services in Toronto often cost 20 - 40% more than standard rates due to immediate response and after-hours labour. However, quick intervention can save money by preventing severe water damage or system failure.
Can I save money by hiring an independent plumber instead of a large company?
Independent plumbers may charge slightly lower hourly rates, around $85 - $100, compared to larger firms. However, companies often provide faster response times, warranty-backed work, and 24/7 support, which adds value for major repairs or emergencies.
What steps can I take to reduce my plumbing costs?
You can lower costs by booking routine maintenance, fixing small issues early, and grouping multiple repairs into one visit to avoid repeated call-out fees. Getting written estimates before work begins can also help prevent unexpected charges.

How do I increase water pressure in house?
Anonymous user 31/08/2026 - 4:38 PM
My water pressure is so low in this house. It takes forever to fill a bath and if water is running somewhere else in the house, it's barely a trickle if you turn on another tap.

Shower faucet only lukewarm even though the fixture feels hot
Anonymous user 21/08/2026 - 9:52 AM
Hi everyone, I’m having some issues with my shower and would really appreciate any advice on what might be going wrong. I’m not sure if the problem is with the water heater, the shower faucet, or possibly both. I have a thermostatic shower faucet, and it’s only giving lukewarm water. The fixture itself gets very hot to the touch where it connects to the hot water line. The hot water comes from a combi water heater (tankless unit), which is located in the same room. Sometimes the shower water even goes cold for about 10 seconds before going back to lukewarm — it seems to happen when the unit cycles off and then kicks back on. All the other hot water faucets in the condo work fine, and the heating system isn’t having any problems. Could this be a faulty cartridge in the shower faucet? Or with the water heater, could there be a build-up or cycling issue that’s causing it to shut down?

basement drain clogged

In the last 24 hours, whenever I turn on a tap in the house the basement drain starts to fill to overflowing. I've tried using an auger/snake, but it doesn't seem to work.
