    bathroom renovation

My parents live in a condo by themselves and requires both bathrooms to be redone and made accessible for older people. I travel often and wanted to hire a company that would make the renovations as stress free as possible for my parents as I couldn't always be there to oversee. We chose The Home Improvement People because of the wonderful things we had heard about them. They did not disappoint. Gerhard led a team of two crews that completed both bathrooms in less then three weeks. The office staff was efficient and helpful in providing any information we needed. Gerhard dealt with the condo office and handled the booking of elevators and all the other required specifications of working in a condo. My parents love their bathrooms. Thanks again to he entire team.

    Basement renovation

My wife and I hired The Home Improvement People after searching for a contractor to renovate our 1970's looking basement. After reading many positive reviews, we contacted them and set up an appointment for a free estimate. Their head estimator Elia, came on time. We were impressed by his professionalism. Other contractors we had called either didn't return our calls or made appointments and cancelled them last minute. Elia walked us through the process of what would be happening from beginning to end. He wrote out an initial estimate with a few different scenarios. After a week or so of considering our options for the basement we contacted Elia and he revised his quote. At no time did we feel rushed or pressured into signing a contract. Work started on the day promised, each day there was something happening. We were also pleasantly surprised that they tidied up at the end of the day. This was important to us as our laundry machines are in the basement. The project manager, Mike, was available to answer our questions in a very timely matter, no matter what the question was or problems that arose during the construction he always came up with a pragmatic solution that was discussed before proceeding. We welcomed his advice and experience. They also let us pick our own material from their numerous suppliers, from tiles, to flooring and plumbing fixtures. The contract was detailed and clear. We had no reservations of having work people in our house as my wife and I both work. We love the finished product, we now have space that we can use and entertain in with out being embarrassed about. A clean function space including a bathroom, home office and a muti purpose room. Thanks again for a job well done!!! Look forward to calling you for our 2 nd floor bathroom in the spring!! I would like to thank Ben, Dan, Elia and Mike for making the process of

    Basement renovation

I reviewed several companies for my basement renovation before deciding on the Home Improvement People. My initial contact with Elia (project manager) and continued contact over the duration of the project was always very good. He always answered his phone/e-mail in a timely manner which allowed us to keep the project on tract. As with any project, things come up that you didn't expect, Elia maintained his professionalism and aided us in making the best decisions for our home. Overall we are very happy with the finished basement. In particular some of the trades people deserve a particular commendation; carpenter/hanyman Fabiano; plumber Roman; painter (name not known). These three in particular delivered their services with a high level of professionalism and quality. Our project did take considerably longer than we expected, which is why I cannot give this review a "10" rating. Although the end project was worth the wait, the waiting in between was hard to deal with. Thanks overall for an amazing job!!

    Main floor renovation

We worked with Larry and his team on our main floor renovation after working with Sealy Design to create the floor plans. Larry and his team were fantastic. I was kept up to date on progress, Larry was very fast to answer my questions and the quality of the work is outstanding. I am high maintenance and picky and they met all of my expectations. We are currently saving for a basement renovation and will be using Larry and his team again.

    bathroom renovation

We have a beautiful master bathroom, but I would never, ever work with The Home Improvement People again. Why? A list of our frustrations is the best way to tell the story. Ben quoted the job with half his attention on his cell phone. He gave a dollar figure for the job in about 5 minutes. When asked for something in writing, he scribbled on a form. Gerhard the contractor came to look at the job. We did not have the same idea of the job. We consulted Ben’s quote. Gerhard laughed and said he couldn’t read it. Nobody could read Ben’s writing. He said he’d tell us what things cost when he’d torn up the floor. Gerhard asked for $6,000 on the first day of the job. We had paid a deposit. We had been given no payment schedule. Gerhard supplied a change work order that added thousands of dollars to the job. Everything had a cost attached to it. At no point did Gerhard say, “Sure, we can do that.” He always said, “Here’s the additional cost.” And just as Ben promised, we had to supply everything – including baseboard sold in 12’ lengths! (We switched to tile baseboards.) The vanity didn’t come with a backsplash (although Gerhard doubted this and we had to confirm it). We discussed alternative backsplashes. Then, one day we got home and the vanity was installed with no backsplash. No communication or creativity brought to the problem whatsoever. We’ll have to figure that one out on our own. The crew must have pounded on the walls. Most nails in the walk-in-closet wall were sprung. A townie-sized hole radiates around a sprung nail in the master bedroom wall. No word about this. We had to discover the damage on our own a week later. We asked for a date when the floor would be finished so the shower guys could come in to measure. No date was given. We asked again and were told the shower guys could come “now.” Not much respect there for the scheduling of the job or for the shower company. Incredibly, the crew’s tools took up one full garage. Most of the lights were on in the house each night when we got home (in daylight!). But one day the crew announced the job would be done in a couple hours. I was asked for about $13,000. I was not asked to review the job or if I was happy. I left for an appointment and came home to find all the tools gone, not a single scrap of the bathroom tiles left behind, and a crystal from the new chandelier with a bent fastener on the bedroom bookcase. In sum, I did not feel we had any useful communication about the job, the payments, or the timing. I did not feel we were working with a crew that cared about our satisfaction with the results, or that brought any genuine interest to the project. Sure the bathroom looks good, but compared to other contractors we’ve worked with, these guys were brutal.

    Answer from pro:

Hi Paula, We were genuinely both shocked and disappointed upon reading your review of the bathroom we completed several months ago. We were disappointed because as a rule, we would do anything and everything possible to make sure our clients are completely satisfied with the overall service and finished workmanship on any renovation we get hired to do. We were shocked because at no point during the renovation did you voice even a small concern. When we read this review, we attempted to reach out to you numerous times, to see what if anything can be done to address your concerns. Unfortunately, for a reason we cannot understand, you had no interest in discussing. What's particularly disturbing is that virtually all the issues raised, have simple explanations. The monies requested throughout the job were all progress milestone payments clearly outlined in our contract. We never requested payment before payment was due. Many of the owner supplied items, and much of the additional work your requested throughout the job, were items clearly delineated in our contract. While we do understand that sometimes having to forward progress payments can be frustrating, unfortunately, we have no choice but to attempt to collect payments as they become due. Issues like illegible handwriting also seem a bit unfair, given the fact that while the original estimate was handwritten, the contract was sent to you neatly typed and formatted in Quickbooks. Gerhard is one of our senior bathroom project managers. He is referenced in fact in many of the reviews on this very site. His professionalism is typically unmatched. He oversaw supplying you 3D drawings to help you better visualize the finished bathroom. We did this at no additional cost. He also made frequent site visits before and during the renovation to make sure everything was progressing on schedule. It always was. Given the fact that both you and your husband were not home during any part of the renovation, most communication occurred via email. Neil who was the on site lead, told me that when he did his final walk through with you, you were elated. If we were allowed, we would post finished pictures of your bathroom. It is magazine worthy. We honestly can't imagine why months after completion of this job, you would post a review that describes a completely different experience than the one we remember. Once posted, we cannot begin to understand, why our attempts to explain and correct any lingering concerns you may have, continue to be ignored. We are at least happy, that you are happy with the finished product. While confused, we are truly sorry you did not find the experience enjoyable. Should you change your mind, our offer to meet or talk still stands. To any potential client who is still reading this, we ask that you understand that no renovation is truly template or predictable. We have built a reputation of delivering beautifully finished jobs that are well supervised and coordinated in as efficiently a manner as is allowable. That is a commitment we will not stop delivering on. Thankfully there are hundreds of reviews that support that. Ben and Dan

    Bathroom Renovation

We had our 50 year old bathroom gutted and redone. The guys from The Home Improvement People showed up on time on the first day. They respected our home and the ongoing routine of our day to day life. The work was fabulous and they left the house spotless each day. We hired them Because of the great reviews and we were thrilled with all aspects of the renovation. It's nice to have found a company with integrity that does what they say they will do for the price agreed upon. Mike and Elia were great to deal with and Haydee always answered any of our questions instantly. Great work!

    Basement renovation

We needed to make structural changes in the basement (moving the furnace, supports etc) and I had full confidence in the team that Larry sent over. The finishing was excellent. Larry and the team he uses are always very professional and know what they're doing. The most important thing is Larry always looked after my concerns. This is the second major renovation Larry has done for us. Even months after the project was done he made sure even small issues were looked after.

    Answer from pro:

Hi Helene, It is always special to do a second renovation for the same client and we are happy that we did not let you down. Thank you for your very kind words! Ben & Dan

    Powder Room Renovation

We just want to let Management know how happy we are with our recently renovated powder room. Your company has good and solid people...from Elia giving us the quote and with Mark being assigned to the work. Mark was very detailed oriented and approachable. He confirmed with us before proceeding to ensure it meets our expectation. He wa punctual, respectful and had a great attitude. Main floor Reno including kitchen and bathroom

We just completed a main floor renovation which included kitchen, bathroom, hardwood flooring, painting, lighting etc. There was concerns undertaking such a big project especially as seniors. We quickly realized that The Home Improvement People and their team lead by Caio Freitas was exactly what we were looking for. They provided a very fair and accurate estimate and the timeline was bang on. Their standards of workmanship are second to none. Caio showed incredible people skills and was just amazing in helping ease the regular stresses of any Reno. He was easy to get ahold of and was very receptive of our ideas. Any issues were addressed immediately by Caio and his team. We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the project and look forward to our basement reno next year. Thank you Home Improvement People, Caio and team we're looking forward to next year :)
