I'm pretty impressed with Boonstra!
We had Adrian come and clean the furnace. Then Kyle and Steven came to do the ducts. All of these guys were professional, pleasant and thorough, answering any questions that we had. Good job everyone!
***EDIT JULY 15, 2016***
I feel strongly that I must amend my review of Boonstra Heating and Air Conditioning.
We were looking for a company to come in and do a complete maintenance check on our furnace and air conditioner, and then have the ducts cleaned. I was quite happy with their service when they came to do maintenance on my furnace on June 9 2016. (Originally they were to service the air conditioner as well, but the tech asked me if I thought that the air flow was good. I said that it seemed ok, but I was no expert.) He showed me where the air conditioner coils were, and said that he didn’t think that they looked bad. I told him that I didn’t know the difference, as I didn’t know what I was looking at. He only charged for the furnace. Following the furnace service, Boonstra also cleaned our ducts. The techs seemed to do a good and thorough job.
One month later, we had Boonstra come again to diagnose a “blower motor failure”. Apparently, checking the blower motor is an additional charge, and therefore was not checked on the June 9th service. The cost for Boonstra to replace the blower motor would be 826 + taxes. We paid the 147 diagnostic fee, and asked what a new furnace would cost – now we have to wait for the salesman to visit. (All this during extreme heat, and we are pressed to make a fast decision.) In the meantime, a family friend (also in the Heating and Air Conditioning business) came to see us, and he suggested that the blower motor should have at least been LOOKED AT during the furnace maintenance visit. (Our family friend replaced the blower motor at a lesser cost than Boonstra had quoted us. Wow, it had a lot of dust on it!) During the replacement of the blower motor, our family friend informs us that the AC coils were plugged.
At this point in time, we call Boonstra’s office to inquire about the AC coils, and why the tech suggested that they were OK. The CSR said that someone would call us back at the beginning of the week. This never happened. When we called again on Wednesday, the CSR told us that “Craig” was in a meeting, and he would call us back. A few hours went by, with no return call, so we called again.
“Lindsey” promptly called us back. We told Lindsey that while the tech was here cleaning our furnace, that he should have at least LOOKED at the blower motor. He would have seen that the blower motor was quite dusty, and he could have suggested that he could clean it while he was there and the furnace was open. (I’m not saying that this activity would SAVE the motor from dying one month later, but I am no expert.) We told her about the AC coils being plugged, she said that that is an extra charge on top of the service. While we agree that this is an extra charge, recall that the tech (a professional) didn’t think it looked too bad. We are disappointed that this service is ONLY PARTIAL (no blower motor inspection or cleaning would occur, AC coils were extra, filters are extra) Lindsey agreed to refund our diagnostic fee for the blower motor. She suggests that cleaning the AC coils are an extra fee, and would take a couple hours to perform. She agrees to cover the cost to clean the coils for us – if we agree to sign up for their membership (monthly fee). We are not interested in this. Lindsey asks us if we would use Boonstra’s services again.
Eventually Lindsey agreed to send the tech to clean the coils at no extra charge to us. Tech comes the next morning to clean the coils, did the job in less than 1 hour (he used a vacuum to suck out the dust in there, and replaced the filter – that the duct cleaning crew put in -- with one of our own). The tech pointed out to us that our filters were cheap filters, and we should use one like the one he had just taken out.
Overall, we like to use local businesses. Boonstra is quite responsive. Did they do a good job on our furnace and AC? I would never have known if a family friend didn’t enlighten us.
