Furnace diagnostic, temporary repair and replacement

Our furnace started dying during the -25 degree cold snap last week and we couldn't get our house warmer than 16 degrees. We have a 3 year old and a 5 month old, so we needed to do something. When I called Action, they initially were booking 2-3 days out, but when they realized we were repeat customers (they installed our AC a few years back) and that we had an infant in the house, they squeezed us in that day. Our furnace was 23 years old, and while the technician told us he could repair it, it was going to be expensive so he suggested we consider putting that money towards a new furnace. We agreed. They came for a quote early the next day. In the meantime, the tech did a temporary fix to get us some more heat while we figured out what furnace we wanted. We always do our due diligence so we received a total of 5 quotes for a furnace and humidifier installation. Action's Comfort Advisor was very knowledgeable, up front on what was included in our quote and what we needed to consider when getting quote from other companies. That was very helpful as some quotes came in for just the appliance price, but when I confirmed if permits and work needed to bring vents to code, those weren't included in their quotes even though we discussed the work at my home. I found that some of the other vendors were very deceiving in how they wrote their quotes. Because of the info our Comfort Advisor gave us, we were able to ask the right questions. Action wasn't the cheapest but they weren't the most expensive either. Since they are large and have a strong network of vendors, we got the furnace brand we wanted wanted with the quality service and warranties Action offers. What I appreciated was that I knew exactly what I was getting from Action. The professionalism of the two installers was great. They were clean, personable and did the work quickly. Before leaving, they walked me through all the work they did and made sure I understood how to work the furnace and humidifier.

    Dishonest and exploitative

I never write reviews but was so put off by my recent experience with Action Furnace that I want to caution others. My furnace went down recently and I had a serviceman from Action Furnace come out to diagnose the problem for $49.99. The gentleman was kind and courteous and quickly diagnosed the problem as being a seized blower inducer motor that would have to be replaced. Within minutes he estimated that it would cost around $800 for the replacement cost and install but would have to call around to find the part before providing an actual estimate. He went to his truck to call a supplier and build an estimate and while he was out I immediately looked up the part online (using the part number on the part in the furnace). I discovered variable prices online from high $80s into the mid $200s obviously causing me concern. When he came back I was quoted $840 for the part and install but he did not provide a break down for the part and labor. I raised my concern with his estimate and told him the prices I saw online in addition to the fact that I noticed the install would only consist of 4 screws, a blow tube attachment, and 2 easy electrical attachments. He agreed that it would only take him several minutes for the install, but, I would neither be able to purchase the motor myself nor for less than $600. I told him I was far too concerned with the price differential and that I would pay for the diagnostic and continue to research it myself. He agreed and left with no problem. I ended up purchasing the product myself from a local supplier that afternoon for $260 tax in and installed it myself with relative ease within 30mins. This is very alarming as there is close on $600 difference in the estimate I received (part and install) and cost of the part purchased on my own. This install would have taken an experienced servicemen much less time than me.... and would equate to a labor cost on the order of $580. Even if it took an hour to do with work, this labor cost would be outlandish and incredibly exploitive. This is a dishonest and unacceptable way to conduct practice by Action Furnace. I would highly recommend customers avoid this company and demand an itemized estimate of parts and labor costs when dealing with service companies. It is your right as a consumer to receive this information and verify costs before accepting an estimate.

Action Furance sticker applied over my furance installation sticker

The main reason I used Action Furnace was that they were available on Saturday and they also had video inspection. The quality of the duct cleaning was fine, however they forgot to block one of the cold air returns in the basement bedroom and the dust poured out onto the bed. The biggest issue I had with Action Furnace was they (Brett and Aaron) put this massive 8.5" x 5.5" Action Furnace sticker over the furnace installation sticker, which is completely uncalled for, as there was empty enough room on the furnace return to apply 50 stickers!

    Get a second opinion

I had booked an appointment with Action for a tune-up and a duct cleaning. Within 5 mins of him being in my basement he shows me a black and white video and tells me that my heat exchange is cracked and that it will need to be replaced. Checked my second furnace, same thing. He then tells me that both furnace's heat exchanges are cracked and they both need to be replaced and that he'll make an appointment for the next day for a salesperson to come over. All this happened within the first 10 minutes that he'd been in my house. The tech we had last year told us we could get a couple more years out of them so we decided we felt pressure and before we spent $9000 we'd get a second opinion. New Tech from different company comes in and tells us that if our heat exchanges are cracked that he will shut off the furnaces and cap them because that's the rules. He took colour pictures of the inside of our furnace and said that [{laughing} there were no cracks and that he will keep the pictures in our files and email them to us. It was him taking responsibility if he was wrong. I could go into more detail but it will bore you. I feel like I was swindled. I feel like the tech's at Action are paid commission if they help sell furnaces. I am so glad that I got a second opinion. I wouldn't recommend this company.

    Answer from pro:

Mrs. Reid, Thank you for your recent comments on Homestars - Your comments seem to be written with a tone to have us look like we intended to in your words "swindle" you. Nothing could be further from the truth. When Action Furnace conducts a service on any furnace, a safety and heat exchanger inspection is included. We feel it is our responsibility as professional furnace technicians to ensure the safety of the furnace. This is usually the FIRST task we perform as there would really be no sense spending time/money on a furnace service if the furnace needed to be replaced because of a damaged heat exchanger...This is exactly what happened in your situation - we discovered you had damaged heat exchangers and you decided you didn't want to spend the money on a duct cleaning and a furnace tune up - so your service call that day cost you exactly $0. Had we performed the cleaning and service first and then told you that your furnaces were damaged and needed to be replaced - you would have been out hundreds of dollars for servicing furnaces that need to be replaced.... Your comments seem to be calling into question the efficiency of our Inspection Equipment. Our heat exchanger inspection cameras use the most advanced infrared technology on the market today. These cameras are designed and built specifically for the purpose of heat exchanger inspections. They are purposely black and white screens because that allows for the best contrast and identification of damage. Our technicians are provided extensive and ongoing training on how to use these cameras. If the technician that provided the second opinion did not have the same technology (and it sounds like he did not as it was something that was colour) then there is simply no way he could have provided the same level of inspection. Both your furnaces are close to 30 years old and are notorious for developing cracks long before now. The spots that these particular heat exchangers crack is in a very precarious and hard to see area of the heat exchanger and without our camera would be virtually impossible to locate and document. The attending technician that day remembers your job vividly and remembers exactly where the cracks were. You state that the second technician told you that if your furnaces are cracked he will "shut them off and cap them because that's the rules." This once again tells me that he was not properly trained. The "rules" I am assuming he is talking about are the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code as set out by The Canadian Standards Association (CSA). These are the "rules" Action Furnace follows and there are only 2 sections that deal with heat exchangers and they read - (4.21.1) states that "Where the heat exchanger of a furnace in a dwelling is found to be defective, it shall be replaced. (4.21.2) states " The heat exchanger referred to in clause 4.21.1 may be temporarily repaired if necessary, and the repair shall be in accordance with procedures acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction." This is what our technician should have told you and would have had a copy of this code with him to show you. I believe you were not interested in hearing anything about any of this and simply asked our technician to leave. Please note that nowhere does it state that the furnace must be shut off and capped. We have offered to send a senior manager from Action Furnace back to your home and re - inspect your furnaces to ensure our technician performed the inspection properly. You have refused to allow us to do that stating - "this would be a waste of my time." This offer still stands and we are willing to re - inspect your furnaces anytime - once again at no charge. New furnace

After 30 years it was time to replace the beast of a furnace that resided in our basement taking up half of our storage area. Action Furnace came by the door one day and we got to talking and the next thing I knew my husband had purchased a new furnace and installation was schedule for two weeks later. The boys showed up at the time they said they would be there, brought in the itty bitty furnace (it's itty bitty in comparison to our beast) they were quick efficient, polite and were extremely clean. The price point was comparable and would definitely recommend them in the future.

Furnace, and Hot Water Heater Died at the Same Time

We had great service from Action Furnace, right from the estimate to the installation. Took about a week for them to call us back to book an appointment for the estimate, then just a couple days from there. Since everything went at once, we decided to include air conditioning. The guys arrived on time, were very considerate, and took great care in making sure they did not make any mess going in and out of the house for supplies. They also cleaned up after themselves very well after the installation. We decided to go with the top high efficiency furnace as there was not a considerable price difference between it and the step down. We upgraded the water heater to slightly bigger to accommodate a newly developed bathroom. Everything has worked to perfection. We will need to call to have AC balanced though, as upstairs still does not get that cool. When the city inspectors game to check everything out, they both said that it was a very professional job and that it was extremely neat. We would use them again in a heartbeat!

    AC Installation

Some issues after AC installation but the owner is trying his best to fix them. Not looking for perfection but at least there is a hope to make it right. They really stand behind their service.

    Furnace

We had our furnace replaced yesterday. Our plumber had a look at it early last week and stated it was time to replace it – being 49 years old and not working. We called Action (our plumbers recommendation) last week and the furnace was installed yesterday. We did look at other companies, all who recommended the same/similar product. Although, Action was a little more expensive, we chose them due to the product; knowledgeable sales person; and the history (age) of the company. We realize we are buying 'peace of mind' as well as a furnace. Jordan, our sales person, was very laid back and knowledgeable. Jordan returned calls promptly to answer additional questions we had. The installers, Terrance and Josh, were very friendly and knowledgeable. They explained things as they went along. We had to leave before they finished the installation. Upon returning, we were pleasantly surprised how immaculate they left our home. They definitely take pride in their work! As it is 31 C , I can't say how the furnace works yet, but I am confident we will be very happy. Thank you. Gerry and Linda.

    A/C Installation

Find another company that actually respects your time and your property and honors their guarantees. A 6 hour A/C install turned into a weeklong nightmare. First they sent a guy ‘who likes to work alone’ so it took 10.5 hours instead of the 6 quoted (something the sales guy neglected to tell us in advance and then later said they had had issues with him taking a while before). Secondly, he would disappear back to the shop several times throughout the day; one time simply because he was missing a single screw. He also had to call in another team to tell him where to cut the access hole in our basement ceiling which took another hour of waiting for them to arrive (to their credit, the two guys who showed up took less than 5 minutes to figure it out unlike their counterpart). Instead of using a stud finder, he proceeded to stab the side of the finished bulkhead on our basement ceiling 5 times before cutting 3 separate holes on bottom of the bulkhead – where he only needed 1 access hole. Lastly, he left without making sure the A/C was properly hooked up to our thermostat, instead trying to get us to ignore his holes and take a free thermostat instead. We had to connect it to our thermostat ourselves. They still expected payment, which we declined citing that the payment was not due until the work was done as per the invoice. This led to a phone call with his manager where we were given 10% off without any mention of stipulations. We were happy with that and paid the remaining total. We put in several calls to the sales guy during the same day as the problems continued to arise. We were promised gift cards we haven’t received for our troubles and promised by the install manager that he would be out first thing the next day to fix the damage. We instead had to call at noon the next day after hearing nothing and they finally sent a guy to look at the ceiling for 5 minutes and schedule an appointment for the following week to fix it. Day arrives, he comes and fixes it. We thought it was done and over with until my husband gets a phone call from the owner of Action Furnace swearing and screaming that the discount be paid back. So much for that Customer Respect Guarantee. We ended up paying the remaining $360 only because we feared that having them uninstall it and refund our money would be met with further hostility and damage to our house. Based on how “well” they seem to follow through with any of their guarantees, we highly doubt they will stand by the warranty. We are STILL not confident the A/C is working properly!
