Repair of animal damage on roof, vents

We had some damage to one of our vents, leading to a squirrel trapped in the attic. Joe from Snap was able to repair and encase the vents in cages while attaching a one-way door to the vent with the hole. A few days later, the squirrel in the attic finally left, and he returned to remove the one-way gate and fix the remaining vent. We are now happily squirrel free and protected against further incursion. Service was prompt, efficient, effective, and overall a pleasure to deal with.

    Answer from pro:

I am amazed at how easily a squirrel can chew through a regular square plastic roof vent. Everybody is vulnerable to this behavior and should get some protection. Now that I think of it I also have to do my own roof vents. My wife has even threatened to call in a company to protect my own vents. I tell her that I will get around to it but get so busy with other roofs I forget. The story about the cobblers kids having the worst shoes is true after all.

Identification and solution of the cause of squirrel infestation

We had a very complicated infestation that the contractor, Joe from Snap Pest Control, was able to completely solve for us and our neighbor, and at a very reasonable cost. We had been hearing a noise in our ceiling, but couldn't isolate a point of access to allow an animal to reach that area. He spent most of the afternoon examining all possible areas. He ended up identiying the cause, set up an animal friendly solution that will remove any further problems, with no physical impact on the affected properties.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks for your review. There are many times when I'm going to a job that I contemplate the various scenarios which could enable a pest issue to develop and take place. On this job the pest was initially thought of as rats. The noises were in the ceiling of the first floor which in my mind ruled out mice or squirrels. Mice make light scratching sounds and squirrels typically enter via an attic. The issue is however that in Toronto anything can and will happen. Here we have two semi-detached row houses with two large bay windows. While I'm at he job something is making sounds in the ceiling. I usually never hear the sounds which most of my clients hear. This time around it appears the sound was of an animal rolling around something and walking almost with a slight hop to it. This could only be a squirrel. I checked both roofs, the perimeter, the basement and still nothing to explain how these animals were getting in. Maybe we could see something by removing a pot-light and placing a scope camera within we assumed ? attempting to remove a potlight proved difficult as the clips were jammed in by the electrician. Then it was decided to drill some holes as another means to take a closer look. As I was getting my drill from my truck on the street outside I noticed the attached house had a similar small bay window roof and thought to myself; I wonder if a squirrel could get in from the other roof go through the ceiling and enter my clients house through that spot. Sure enough the neighbors didn't notice large squirrels walking across through their ceilings either. I was happy it wasn't rats and could be fixed by a simple 1 way door. I had seen this happen before but only through roof porch areas. The good thing here is that I can also do wildlife work so I happened to have everything I needed to do this job in my truck. There was no need to call in a different company because I handle both pests and wildlife. Only In Toronto.

    Mice control

I am very impressed with services from Joe of Snap Pest Control. He did a marvelous job in sealing up all the holes around my house. He took his time to make sure all the possible entries for the mice are blocked. His job is thorough and his services attitude is great. I highly recommend Joe of Snap Pest Control for any pest control services.

    Answer from pro:

Thank you for your review. I laughed at the work whach was done by the previous company on this job. This sort of work brought back memories of my days as a young exterminator at a large multinational pest control company. During those days we would run across an opening and simply use glue boards to close off an obvious opening for mice. I know it sounds ridiculous but because nobody had tools with them or mesh or anything else the techs would peel off mice glue boards and stick them on an opening. Eventually the glue boards would break open or be chewed apart but this was the method. These guys used this glue board cheap ineffective method on the garage. I had to peel them all off and staple mesh to these areas. Along the base of the drywalled garage some nice left over baseboard was attached. Plywood was also used to close a large opening in the storage area. Amazing how many garages I go to where boarding materials are simply lying around for the taking. This job took me nearly 4 hours to complete but I did have a lot of fun with the boarding up part I must admit. I carry a lot of tools and materials to tackle any job.

    Bug Issues

Recently noticed some new bugs in my house so I contacted Joe through HomeStars. Joe responded very promptly and was very honest. By looking at the picture I sent him he said that the bug was not harmful in any way and that the issue would resolve itself (sometimes these bugs just winter in the house and come out in the spring). He explained how to prevent this from happening next year and didn't charge me anything. Another company I contacted on HomeStars (which was highly rated as well), said it was a different type of insect (wrong) an wanted to charge me for an extermination that I did not need. Thanks again Joe.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks for your review.I know this bug well and have come across this insect many times over the course of my career. Sometimes it is just best to let nature take its course. This pest should be dealt with in the fall months when the congregate on walls and look to overwinter in wall voids.

    Difficult extermination job

I was referred to Joe after two unsuccessful extermination attempts from other companies. I have a semi-detached home, and had a very difficult situation with rodents entering my basement ceiling from a partition wall that was sealed from the interior of my home. The other two companies I used before Joe tried minimal baiting, which did not resolve the issue. Joe was exceptional. He made several visits to my property and after much discussion and consultation devised a complicated plan that involved some construction work and remedial work to my wall and ceiling (using a contractor of his recommendation). I was initially uncomfortable with the plan given that I have a very nice home and there was significant work involved, but Joe assured me that the work would be completed to a standard of perfection and the problem would be resolved for good. He kept his promise and I was extremely happy with the work. My home was left virtually the way it started, and the problem was completely gone the minute the work was done. It is now about 8 months later and the problem continues to be entirely eliminated. Moreover, Joe has repeatedly followed up with with me to ensure there has been no recurrence. I would highly recommend Joe for any difficult extermination job. He is not your average exterminator and can think outside the box, particularly when the obvious and easy solutions don't work. He is willing to spend the time and get the job done right. He is not the most inexpensive, but in my view when you have a difficult problem you want the best and you want it done properly.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks for your review. I must say this was an interesting job and comes after the response which accompanied another job just 3 or 4 reviews down on this page. Note how immediately the problem was resolved ( not for just 6 months ) with these pests being "blocked out " . Baiting was used by the other companies and they did die from it but more and more were just waiting to come in via the open hidden access. Yes this was a difficult job but now my client no longer has to ever worry about this issue again. I know that there are many people out there that are dealing with this issue and it can be solved. Anybody that says that they cant be "blocked out " is just wasting your time and money.

Finding a solution not just a bandaid! Mice are gross!

Joe did an amazing job helping us with our mouse problem. I have used another company in the past, while they baited our home, we still had a lot of mice coming through our home and it seemed to be never ending this winter. After finding they had been trying to make a home in the back of our pantry I was desperate to find another solution. I read through reviews of several pest control companies and chose Snap Pest Control because the reviewers said Joe was thorough and actually cared about the source of the problem - he also includes following up on the problem as part of his fee. He really took the trouble to find entry points into our house, and sealed up some clear problem areas. If you are struggling with mice, I recommend Snap pest control completely. Joe is also kind and easy to work with.

Thanks for your review. This one job had me under two decks. After removing deck boards with my crowbar and sliding under both I was covered in mud, webs, dust, dirt, dog do do and who knows what else. I found nothing, no access at all. At the last moment as I was emerging from beneath the front as I was pierced by a rusty nail which tore a hole in my over-alls I noticed the hole. The hole was in an area with-in easy reach which and had nothing to do with any of my previous efforts. I laughed, plugged it up, and showed my client the pictures. Having found it at the beginning really didn't matter because I still wanted to make sure we only had one access point to deal with and still would've went under. Oh well those overalls have been through hell and back and needed to be put to rest anyways. Joe

    Squirrels in between our floors

Joe is a lifesaver! We started hearing running, banging and purring in what we thought were in the ducts. We called Joe and when he came he pointed out that they were not in the vents, they were actually in between our floors. They had chewed a big chunk of our exterior wood trim. He installed a one way door and offered to come back in a month to confirm that they are gone and seal it up. He really knew what he was doing and we were glad to have found him in HomeStars.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks guys. These pesky squirrels chewed through a midsection of my clients home like I've never seen before. I went in the attic, and on the roof, before I located this spot. Installed a 1 way door to ensure they were out. I will return in a month to close the opening with plywood and mesh over the area as insurance. I requested some matching paint to make it all look nice again. Joe

Rats in building: inspection and solutions

Joe is a life saver. He came in to help us with rats inside our apartment after we realized that the pest control company we had originally hired was not addressing the source of the rats. The other company was dealing only with the symptoms of the problem rather than the problem itself. We realized we needed more than a bandaid solution. After reading through the other reviews of Snap Pest Control, it was clear that we needed Joe. Joe came in and conducted a thorough and systematic inspection, and managed to pinpoint what seems to be the core source of the rats. He thoroughly explained the situation to us and our landlord, and he provided us with clear and concrete options to deal with the problem. He is a top-notch professional and I am so grateful to have had him here to assist us with this horrible issue. Thank you, Joe.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks guys I simply had to let your landlord know exactly what he was up against. Rats are complicated because they tunnel into structures. I've had to gut whole basements in order to stop rat entry. Just this last summer two basements were opened with both showing open access. My competitors on this page have no idea how many of their dead and poisoned rats we pulled out along the way. One job was particularly interesting. Early last year I was called upon to investigate a rat issue which was downtown in Toronto. The discussion took place as I was going away for a weeks vacation. This client wanted somebody quickly and I recommended another company which could help. Six months later I received a call from this individual and he wanted me to help him since he was still having issues. The rats were out of control now and my referred company which had offered a 1 year warranty had already been there 11 times to simply bait and bait. This client felt sorry for the initial company because he still had many more months to lose even more money on this job based on his unlimited 1 year warranty. Enter company number 2 which loves to bait and only bait and even says guys that close access points like myself are an embarrassment to the industry. This guy comes in, offers a 6 months warranty, strings his bait together with wire and negatively comments on the first companies work altogether. The second company also came back numerous times and baited and baited. The second company probably still feels that they were successful only because this client never called them back. Instead we took over the job and resolved the issue. Dominick and I made several cuts to rule out normal entry point areas before it was decided that the only other course of action was to remove the entire interior wall in the basement leading up to the stairs. We could feel the air temperature difference and knew the insulation was compromised. Imagine an opening in between two semi's that spanned the entire length of a homes mutual ( or so we thought ) foundation wall. The houses had two separate ( looked like a semi ) foundations with a gap in between. These rats tunneled up the open gap between both houses at will and simply chewed through the hidden rim joists. The walls were removed, we filled in the entire 50 foot gap with large boulders, cement, wire mesh and shards of glass. This job took a week to complete and we have not heard of or seen one rat since which was 6 months ago. Nothing was going to stop them permanently from entering this clients house because the area has an established subterranean network of tunnels underneath it which they could access at will at any time. In the end maybe my client should have waited for me to return from my vacation. Rat jobs are not cut and dry and simply throwing $300 towards at a rat problem doesn't always solve it. I hope this is helpful to anyone out there which is faced with rats. Rats should be taken seriously and I feel as if they are one of the worst possible pests to potentially encounter. Houses have been sold on this one issue alone. Next time you bid on a home take note that if there air fresheners in the basement going off, run!!

    Kitchen Spray

It's no secret that having a pest control issue is very sensitive subject, but Mr Bruno treated my situation with extreme care and concern. He was extremely thorough in his use of the product and I have not had a problem since. The service was a year ago and have not had a pest problem since. Mr. Bruno was referred to me by my home inspector and I would gladly recommend him to anyone!

Thanks for your review. Cockroaches require a lot of work because they like to hide. In fact they will spend 95% of their lives hiding out and nesting. Looking for nests can be difficult without some good old fashioned detective skills. They can nest in stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, keyboards, calculators, lamps, outlets, smoke detectors, baseboards, walls, clocks, tiles, trim, baseboards, fans, toilets, vanities, sinks, dishwashers, knife blocks,etc.... One gravid female roach will produce 1 egg case (around 40 eggs per case) every 5o days. She is fertilized once and can then produce 5-6 egg cases ( 40 eggs per case ) during her lifespan. Therefore just one Ootheca ( egg case ) with a 50/ 50 mix of males and females under the correct conditions (20 x 40 eggs) could produce 800 roaches within a few months. Even if we assumed half this amount at 400 roaches that's still a nightmare to most people. These are the jobs which require the most intensive work and have become a joke within the industry because of the money which property managers are willing to pay for roach removal. Imagine with all those hiding places all the work involved to rid one unit of roaches properly. I average 3 hours to do 1 apartment and my competition may average 5-10 minutes if that. The approach is simple, guy walks in to the unit dabs roach bait in shelves hinges, and under sink then leaves. Roaches may or may not eat it then tenant comes home and the roaches are hiding. At night 1 or 2 come out and wallah nothing has changed whatsoever. Property manager is happy because they paid $20 to have the unit gelled. The pest control company is happy because they treated 50 units at $20 dollars each. The tenant still has roaches and is still not happy. Property manager calls me for advice I tell them the whole unit must be treated give them a cost they laugh go find even cheaper less effective solutions, the roaches are even more numerous and the tenant still has roaches. I feel for people that are living in these conditions . For those of you out their living in apartments make the property management aware that you want your units treated by spraying cracks and crevices, waiting for roaches to emerge, mechanically removing roaches and then applying residual dust. Two weeks later returning to said apartment and re-treating for any recently emerged roaches. Roaches can be missed and egg cases will hatch. Another month later the place is treated again as insurance. Treatments should happen on a schedule and not be dependent upon whether one sees roaches or not because they hide and remember the sheer amount of devastation that 1 female roach can accomplish.

    Mice Control

We discovered mice infestation after moving into an older home. The company I hired was able to temporarily fixed the issue but the problem reappeared last fall again, since they did not find the entry points by which the mice were coming in. I called Joe at Snap Control after reading excellent reviews on HS in early December. Joe is a professional. He explained the process of elimination and took his time to inspect the property. He spent few hours outside to close off all possible entry point and re baited the inside of the house. So far I have not seen any new evidence of mice. Joe mentioned that he will visit again in Spring and check all the bait stations. I highly recommend Joe for his professionalism and work ethic.

    Answer from pro:

Thanks for your kind review. The issue came down to an open access point and heavy baiting in order to get this issue under proper control. Having seen this scenario once before on another job helped narrow things down. It is nice to hear that things are improving and I look forward to conducting another inspection in the spring. Joe
