    Fast, efficient - and responsive

Panic had set in after I discovered Knob and Tube hidden in the ceiling after trying to install a ceiling fan. KnT is not really that big a deal - I couldn't tell how it was patched into the rest of the updated electrical... Called KnT Electric up based on a recommendation from a friend. Best experience ever! Bill gave me the most thorough quote I have ever seen and was willing to work with me to rein in cost. All in all - you can't go wrong with this company. And the fact that you get an inspection thrown into it is also great. As a new homeowner I feel very secure with their work. I'm telling everyone about them now! Thanks KnT Electric!

Thank you - I will pass the kind words on to my guys.

    Removal of knob & tube

Bill and his team upgraded the wiring in our 1920s home, along with a host of other tasks to improve the appearance and functionality of the house. They were meticulous, knowledgeable, efficient, and tidy. They were also able to complete this fairly invasive job with minimal damage to the walls and ceilings – which they also patched. My partner and I were very impressed by everyone's professionalism and attention to detail. Bill proved to be attentive, available, and transparent about all costs up front. This is our first home and being unaccustomed to this type of work we appreciated that Bill provided a list of all potential jobs we could have him do, with their associated costs, before the contract was even awarded. This put us at ease with the process and helped us make our decision. Now that the work is done I'd absolutely recommend KNT for this type of work.

    Knob & Tube Replacement

We recently purchased an older home and knew there was some knob and tube that needed replacing. Bill and his team responded so quickly we were able to have it all replaced before we even moved in! I have never seen a home project be so stress-free, thorough and professional.

    Answer from pro:

Thank-you, to be honest my guys enjoy working for new home owners- as many of them are new home owners. They understand the excitement and stress that comes with a new home. I am glad they were able to make moving into your new home so enjoyable.

    Project – Entire home rewiring

Bill’s crew was a breath of fresh air. We have a large 100 year old house and were undergoing other renovations when we retained KNT. Bill's crew worked diligently and attentively to accomplish an incredible workload in a short period of time, while also taking care to minimize disruption and mess. His crew hardly misses a beat once they arrive and until they leave. It’s obvious that Bill takes care of them well and that they take pride in their work. Bill himself is a consummate straight shooter. He is fully transparent and gives you the facts and his sensible advice whenever requested. I felt confident in any decision I made once I heard his view, whether adding a pot light in X location or moving an outlet to A location instead of B location. We had a lot going on while Bill worked on our house and we are very grateful that Bill and his team did such a great job while creating such little stress. We will call them for any future electrical work we have.

Thank-you for the kind words, I will pass it on to the team. I know that it is my guys that I have trained & I trust them fully. I am glad that you are happy with the work.

Rewire 100 year old detached house

Some wiring upgrades had been carried out in an early 1980s reno. But I did not realize how limited they were until finding active knob and tube when I tried to replace an upstairs light fixture. I immediately called KNT who are highly rated on Homestars. I could not have been happier! Bill and his team are by far the most professional contracting firm I have dealt with. Bill made time the same day I called to come by for a site visit which was carried in a very systematic way. At the end of the visit he was able to give me a complete briefing on the work required as well as a time and cost estimate which turned out to be completely accurate! The written quote was complete, well laid out and quite easy for me to understand. Having engaged NT I appreciated their ability and willingness to meet my preferred start date. Bill's project management was excellent throughout and everyone on the 4 person team was efficient and pleasant to deal with. (Remember that rewiring is about the most invasive renovation work their is because it has to be carried out on all floors almost simultaneously.) A much larger new electrical panel was installed; all knob and tube wiring replaced on 3 floors as necessary; new outlets and exterior lights added to meet current code and all the new lighting fixtures I had on hand were installed. I noted only two small errors in the course of the project and they were immediately corrected. I was extremely pleased with both the work and professionalism of KNT Electric, have recommended them to family and will certainly use them for any of my electrical needs in the future.

    Answer from pro:

I am glad we were able to correct the errors- we always try to take care of any issues right away. I am glad Hugo got the heat going- we had some crazy temperature swings in the month of May

    Very professional; outstanding work

Our home was built in 1922 and had various renovations with previous owners over the years. Bill and Tim came to our home, completed a free assessment and fully explained the type of work they do. They were able to identify where we still had the old knob and tube wiring and provided a very detailed estimate of the work to be done by email. The team of 4 to 6 worked well together: were polite, covered all the furniture, cleaned up at the end of each day, were very careful with old wooden panelling, started and finished the job on time all within the budget quoted. We can highly recommend their services.

Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) Deficiencies Remediation

My experience with KNT Electric was very positive, from the beginning of the project to its conclusion. KNT responded promptly to my first call with a preliminary visit as soon as I was ready. This led to an estimate which coincidentally was more reasonable than the 2 others; I also preferred KNT's thorough and professional approach. Three KNT electricians arrived on the agreed day and time, and spent the prescribed time to complete the job. They were efficient, knowledgeable and worked through until completion. Anyone who has contracted renovation work will know how reassuring (and rare) it is to have a contractor who does what he says he will when he says he'll do it. Plus, KNT inspired my confidence by their visible knowledge and experience with electrical matters. I unconditionally recommend KNT.

    Answer from pro:

Thank-you for the kind words, It is Tim, Kevin & Ryan that deserve the praise. They quoted, managed and completed the ESA elec-check process. Thank-you for your patience in scheduling your job.

Not so painful Knob 'N Tube removal

It was a rather unexpected turn of events that led us to meet and hire Bill of KNT Electric to replace our knob and tube wiring. Of course, as owners of a 1925 era house, we knew that knob and tube was becoming increasingly unpopular among insurers and real estate agents and that someday we would have to “bite the bullet” and get our walls and ceilings ripped open in the pursuit of these legacies of an older home. But thus far we had managed to distract ourselves with planning more exciting projects, ones that would give a new look to something we could see rather than something that was hidden behind our walls. When, in the process of planning one of these projects - the installation of a new window - we learned we would have to pay almost $800 to temporarily sheathe our incoming Hydro wires, we decided to explore the possibility of permanently moving those Hydro wires and running them through a conduit. Our neighbours had done this relatively recently and the result looked solid and tidy. We contacted our neighbour to ask how they had proceeded with getting their wires moved. In minutes we were hearing the story of their recent knob and tube adventure involving unanticipated insurance demands, tight timelines just before Christmas and daunting descriptions by friends and contractors of the mess, disruption and cost of knob and tube removal. But then, among the contractors they interviewed, they had found a great little company specializing in knob and tube removal, that promised - and proved to live up to that promise - to do the work considerably less invasively, in a shorter length of time than the competitors and still at a good price. That company was KNT Electric. It was difficult to ignore such an enthusiastic endorsement of a company, especially by people who we knew carefully researched their candidate contractors and who did not shy away from being critical when criticism was warranted. But our main interest was still the moving of the outdoor Hydro wires. We decided to ask KNT if they could do this job but thought it might also be a good opportunity to get some idea of what knob and tube removal could entail, in terms of work and cost, “for future reference.” Bill came over that same afternoon. After checking out the exterior Hydro wires, he toured, from an electrical point of view, the interior of our house. The next day, he emailed us a detailed estimate that included separate components for the outdoor work and the indoor work. He indicated that he had no problem doing just the outdoor work, if that was what we wanted. We felt reassured by Bill’s description of how KNT would handle the knob and tube removal. They would try to minimize the number and size of holes, and we could choose, for extra charge, to have them patch up the holes at the end of the job. We liked Bill’s proposal to include some other improvements, for example the installation of GFIs near kitchen sinks and the provision of designated circuits for refrigerators. We appreciated the fact that his detailed estimate included an itemized list, in both text and spreadsheet formats, of the specific tasks to be done and their individual prices. The predicted length of the job - 6 days plus another 1 1/2 days for patching if we chose this - did not seem too onerous. And the quoted price for all that time and effort seemed reasonable. Thus, our thoughts of “for future reference” became “let’s do it now”, and we hired KNT to do both the moving of the Hydro wires and the knob and tube removal. The work was scheduled to start in less than a month. There was little preparation required of us except putting fragile knickknacks out of harm’s way. Bill indicated that they would move things that had to be moved. In the weeks before the start date, we made lists of questions and requests, such as preferred locations for new receptacles. Urgent questions we e-mailed to Bill; he always replied, usually within a day. The rest we saved for the first day of work, as per Bill’s advice. On starting day, Bill and a crew of three young men showed up exactly on time. While the crew set up protective tarps and plastics and brought in tools, we reviewed our lists of questions and requests with Bill. And then the work began in earnest. We were impressed. The fellows worked hard. Except for a lunch break, which was sometimes quite short, they seemed to take little time off. Every scheduled work day, they arrived at 10 am and left at 6 pm. They were pleasant and despite varying levels of facility in English, they cheerfully tried to answer any questions and deal with any concerns we had. They were flexible and creative in finding solutions to obstacles in their work. Before they left at the end of the day, they cleaned up. Tools were put tidily into corners in the basement. Bill came by most days, sometimes more than once, to check how things were going. Of course, holes did begin to appear. Apparently we have some structural anomalies in our house, so the paths of wires aren’t as straightforward as they are in many houses. Considerable drilling was needed. Some fixtures proved to be finicky and needed some fixing. Bill’s predicted 6 days of electrical work stretched to 9 days. We felt better, though, when the Hydro inspector dropped by for the rough-in inspection and not only expressed satisfaction with the work but also commented on how little damage had been done to walls and ceilings. We were also happy with how smoothly the relocation of the outdoor Hydro wires went, despite it being a cold, wet day. And we appreciated some of the unexpected additions KNT provided for us, such as covered lights in closets and a pot light in the entryway to a bedroom. We agreed to have KNT patch up the holes. Although we knew we would have to have a plasterer come in to do a better fix, since we have patterned and stippled plaster ceilings, we did not wish to live with holes, even for a few weeks. As fixtures were reinstalled and patches done, our house began to look once again like home. Some of the patches have blended in amazingly well into our textured surfaces. We thus do not feel a huge urgency in getting the final plaster work and repainting done, though we realize these tasks will eventually be necessary. Now that the work is finished, there is the satisfaction of knowing that our wiring is in accordance with current standards. Bill has provided us with a letter certifying that all knob and tube wiring in our house has been replaced. He has also provided us with a guide as to how our circuits are now mapped onto our electrical panel. This is very useful “basic information” to have about our house and important since our old electrical maps had now become obsolete. And our outdoor Hydro wires look tidy and secure in their new location, well out of the way of any window installers! We are now joining our next-door neighbours in enthusiastic recommendation of KNT Electric!

    Answer from pro:

Thank-you- I hope you enjoy your new window. Glad to be of service. I will let the boys know of your kind words of praise.

    Knob and Tube replacement

KNT updated all the wiring in our 1926 two-storey home. For insurance purposes we needed to eliminate all Knob and Tube and aluminum wiring. We chose KNT after 4 other companies described their work plan and costs. KNT's price was very good, the job was completed quickly, with 4-5 men working for 6 days. Damage to plaster was minimal, clean-up was ongoing with minimal disruption to our use of the house. The owner Bill Tang and his team were always available to explain the work and to adjust the plans.
