    Gas Fireplace Repair

We have a 20 year old Napoleon gas fireplace and a couple of years ago the pilot started going out intermitmently. We called in another company the technician cleaned the fireplace and got it running but told us that our fireplace was old and parts were no longer available and we would probably need to replace it in the next few years. I was told a new fireplace would cost in the order of $6,000. Within a year the pilot started going out again and this fall we called Natural Gas Technicians. Jeremy came out and did a diagnostic and it didn't take him too long to determine that the mercury switch was not working properly. He advised that Napoleon had a retrofit kit for the inner works of this particular fireplace that replaced the mercury switch with a thermopile. We advised Jeremy to go ahead and order this part and within a couple of weeks he was back to install it. The igniter on the new unit was faulty but Jeremy had a part in his truck to replace it and within a couple of hours we had an operational fireplace again. We highly recommend Jeremy. He is prompt, professional, courteous and honest. When he was tallying up the bill for this work he deducted the time it took him to replace the faulty igniter which was not his fault or ours. He is also very tidy and leaves the work area as clean or cleaner than he found it. I found it interesting that the previous company that serviced our fireplace told us that it would need to be replaced and yet Jeremy immediately advised that there was a retrofit kit for this fireplace. I guess the difference is that the other company sells and installs fireplaces and may have wanted to sell me a new fireplace rather than keep the existing one running. Jeremy has given us hope that there are still some honest and reliable business people out there ! Jeremy has since breathed new life into our neighbours fireplace as well.

Thanks David! It is very rewarding to have great review from someone with a strong technical background! You saw how many tools and steps it took to take it apart, then do the exact opposite to put it together and complete the repair. Your service call touched on many common themes I hear everyday. Firstly, that a "reputable" fireplace company had come out and said, "sorry there are no parts available for this old fireplace, but we would be happy to quote a new one". It is sad to say that many of these "reputable companies" have NO INTENTION ON FIXING YOUR FIREPLACE (YES I SAID IT!)! If anyone would like to know about their fireplace, just call, email or text me your model and I can tell you all about it. Secondly, I don't have clients complain about my billing because I am very reasonable and explain everything I can upfront. Indeed the cracked ignitor was not your fault or mine, but it is my responsibilty and I take care of the incidentals when required-often unbeknonwst. Also I don't charge extra for "call backs" if it is related to the original issue. I'm glad to have a replacement ignitor in the van to save a rescheduling for both of us! Thirdly and very important, I take extreme care in eliminating the possibility of any potential damage to property. Everytime I enter a home I am looking for obstacles, consciously preventing wall scuffs and floor scratches. Most effective in scuff/scratch prevention is always using a good quality drop sheet and using a tool bag instead of a tool box. I use a top quality ash vacuum-never a air compressor. Shoe covers and cotton gloves are also commomly used. Thanks again for the referral to your neighbours and let me know if I can be of assistance in the future! Jeremy

    Gas Fireplace Repair

After living with a non working fireplace for years we decided it was finally time to get it going again. Jeremy fit us in right away and determined that it needed a good clean and maintenance. It was up and running within an hour. A few days later the same problem occurred (delayed ignition) and Jeremy came out again. I was very impressed that he had contacted the manufacturer to obtain a manual for the fireplace as it was pretty old. After some more tests and trouble shooting he was able to fix the issue once and for all at no charge. It was an issue that was easily missed the first time. He explained everything step by step and was very informative. We have been enjoying our fireplace ever since. I would not hesitate to use his services again.

Hi Marcie, Thanks you for the kind review! Your fireplace was a great reminder to myself (and others) that there can be multiple issues that contribute to a fireplace malfunction. I did not catch the secondary issue and so I literally did my homework before coming back. As a general rule, I do not charge anything for a "call back" when the issue is related to the original service call. Thank you for sharing your experience. Happy Holidays! Jeremy

    Connecting our Gas Range

Jeremy was wonderful. Although his hectic schedule meant a delay in him arriving, he accommodated us on very little notice and had the stove going in no time at all. This was the second time we had used his services and would recommend him highly. Courteous, professional and friendly.

    Fireplace repair

We thought we were looking at a large repair bill to get out has fireplace up and running. Jeremy came in, was courteous, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He ran some quick diagnostics and determined that the problem was not the fireplace, but was the wall switch, which turned out to be a lot less money than what we had anticipated. Someone else probably would have taken apart the whole fireplace first, costing more $ in time spent here only to maybe determine the problem was the switch. Jeremy was here for only 30 minutes. Well done Jeremy. Would definitely call again.

Hi Linda, Thanks for the kind words! I use the same procedure for each service I attend , which adds to my efficiency and keeps costs down . As with most of my calls, my volt meter tells me everything I need to know about what is happening. It was very good of you to have me fix the fireplace for the new homeowner. Best of luck with the move and enjoy your new home! Jeremy - Natural Gas Technicians Inc/ The Fireplace Doctor

    Service

Jeremy came to repair the gas fireplace. He checked it thoroughly, and he was able to repair it. We had been advised that we would need to buy a new one. He found the problems and replaced the 2 faulty parts. Very professional. Workspace clean and tidy. We recommend him highly. Thanks Jeremy!

    Answer from pro:

Hi Cathy, I appreciate the great review! From the first time we spoke and you told me your model number, I was sure I could fix your fireplace and you didn't need a new one. It is unfortunate (and unacceptable) that "reputable" companies are increasingly saying that replacement is the only option. The motives of these companies are clearly obvious-they make more money on new installations. That means they are not fixing older fireplaces and are recommending replacement. On the other hand, we are a repair based business and are happy fix your fireplace with a option for replacement as a last resort. Your repair had classic symptoms pointing to a bad valve. The thermopile had good readings (450mv+), so it looked like a bad gas valve. However, with my 20 years experience, I will tell you that the gas valve is a problem less than 2% of the time. The pilot stays lit so we know the thermalcouple and safety loop is good, which leaves the thermopile or the valve. The millivolts are good so you assume the thermopile is good and the valve is bad, BUT, a "good" reading thermopile can short "under load". So before considering the valve bad you must disconnect the old thermopile and connect a spare one outside the fireplace where you heat it with a torch. When the fireplace works, you then know the old thermopile is bad and the valve is good, so all you need to do is replace the $55 thermopile. Thank you Cathy for the opportunity to help you and am glad you sought a second opinion to get your fireplace fixed! Best regards, Jeremy

    New gas fireplace

Thanks for finding a gas insert that saves space and looks great. Quick and clean work

    Answer from pro:

Thanks Kate! Your fireplace is the latest technology which allows it to be only 9" thick! Any other fireplace would build out too far into the room and not look right. The pictures look great! It was challenging to work around your Contractors schedule because everything has to follow a specific sequence. When you hire me I am 100% there when you need me and I never hold up the other trades! I was also pleased I could save the bush in front of the vent. Now nobody can see the vent from the road! Thanks for your business! Best regards, Jeremy Graat
