Air conditioner repair
We have a 22 year old Carrier a/c unit which wasn't providing any real cooling. Since we had a comprehensive protection plan from Reliance ($16.99/month for furnace and a/c), I called them at 11am, they sent a technician, Rick (0861) who arrived at 1:15 pm. I was told that a/c units generally only last 20 years max, so was invited to get a quote on a new unit if I preferred, rather than look for repairs. Instead I asked him to try to find the problem (want a few more years out of it if possible). So he opened up the plenum, used a sensitive device to search for leaks of the coolant (R22), couldn't find any, then went outside to test for leaks. Within a short time he found a significant leak at a return valve, which he repaired. He continued to check for further leaks, found none, then added two and one half lbs of R22, closed up the plenum, then balanced the system. All in all, it took about 2 1/2 hours, and in the end the air conditioner worked better than it had in 15 years! Technician was a real gentleman, explained everything in detail, was very efficient and clean, knew what he was talking about, and seemed genuinely happy for me and my wife that he could help. Can't get better service than that.
For those with older equipment, strongly recommend Reliance Home Comfort protection plan - it's ridiculously inexpensive and they stand by the plan. Contacting them is surprisingly direct, I've never waited, their telephone menu systems are simple.
