Poor Customer Service and Predatory Water Heater Rentals

Im sharing my frustrating experience with Reliance to warn others about their poor customer service and the predatory nature of their water heater rental agreements. Heres what Ive encountered: Horrible Customer Service: Ive been promised three times that a manager would call me back within 24 hoursnobody has. Twice, representatives hung up on me while claiming to consult with their superiors. Misleading Agreements: Like many others, I was locked into a 7-year lease that was casually presented by a service technician who clearly didnt understand the fine print. Exorbitant Costs: In Ontario, where water heater rentals are oddly common, Reliance is charging customers $7,000 over 10 years for a water heater that would cost $2,000 to purchase outright or finance. Now that Im renovating, I no longer need the unit. However, the only option Reliance has provided is to pay the full remaining rental obligation upfront, which is completely unreasonable. They refuse to offer reasonable alternatives like a prorated cancellation fee or lease transfer. This system feels designed to trap homeowners in long-term agreements with no escape. I urge anyone considering a water heater rental to avoid Reliance and look into purchasing or financing a unit instead. If Reliance cares about its reputation, they need to address their customer service failures and make their agreements more transparent and fair.

    Run

Warning to people wanting to get involved with this company, check reviews, reddit posts and BBB complaints. We bought our first home last year knowing we had a water heater rental but not who though. Assumed it was paid off since we never received a bill until a year later with a years worth of charges for bills we never received. seems the previous owner was renting this place and never lived here so the bills never came to this address. You stated the previous owner didn't notify your company until last month of our information. As per YOUR contracts the previous owner is required to notify you of our information before moving and did not, so should have been responsible (again through your contract) to pay the water heater buy out. Now we get a $350.00 FIRST bill for a 16 year old water heater we could have bought out for less. We couldn't even have dealt with it if we knew since the owner never contacted them to say they moved and put our name on the contract. Spoke to your team, 2 different agents who d

    Fee Gouging

I was a loyal customer of Reliance Home Comfort for 16 years, but my recent experience with them has left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. When my water heater started leaking in the spring of 2024, I called Reliance to request a repair. A technician was sent to my home, but instead of addressing the problem, he did absolutely nothing. His advice? Call customer service to renew your contract so you can get a new water heater. No repair, no solutionjust an attempt to lock me into another long-term contract. This interaction made me realize it was time to explore other options. After some research, I found a reputable company to purchase a new water heater from. However, Reliance wasn't done with me yet. To close my account, they slapped me with a ridiculous $400 fee. After 16 years of paying them faithfully, this is how they treat their customers? Reliances service is nothing short of a cash grab. They seem more interested in squeezing every last penny out of their customers than providing reliable service or honoring loyalty. Their behavior is unprofessional, and their policies are exploitative. I would not recommend Reliance Home Comfort to anyone looking for honest and dependable service. If you value your time, money, and peace of mind, look elsewhere.
