Install tankless water heater in condo

PERFECT! ZERO COMPLAINTS! When Michael walked through my door it was like all my prayers had been answered. I was extremely nervous about switching out from a tank system to tankless especially because it required all new ducting in my condo. McKinnon was professional, honest and respectable from the start. All the staff are extremely kind and sincere. They kept all their promises; on time completion, of product quality and the type of work necessary. No hidden surprises. Highly recommended. I am very very happy. Wish I knew of them sooner!!!! It was a breeze and I feel very comfortable with my new unit with a company I know I can trust. THANK YOU!

Replace older boiler with new high efficiency boiler in century home

Our 14 year old boiler was declared broken in mid-March by Enercare. With no heat heading into a late cold snap, we had to move fast.

Michael, the owner, provided great advice. So did some competitors, but we elected to give the job to McKinnnon since they tied for the best price and offered solid advice.

McKinnon's team arrived on time, first thing on the day after we agreed to buy. They did a good job of working in our ancient boiler room, brought the direct venting pipes through a finished basement bedroom very clean and tight to the wall, with minimal damage and mess. They worked until midnight to finish the job in one day, and expertly installed a new bleed valve on a very old paint-covered cast iron rad so they could refill the system. (Other vendors have refused to work with these old paint-covered rads). When I returned home the next day, the house was warm, and there was nothing to clean up.

We were very pleased with Michael and McKinnon's advice, work, value for money, and responsiveness. I would recommend them.

Air Handler Replacement

Late last year my air handler broke down. Enercare had come to replace my hot water tank and broke my air handler. As usual they did not compensate me for it instead sold one of their products to replace it. After 4-5 visits by technicians and we spending hundreds of dollars to get drywall cut in unlikely areas so that they could see whats behind the unit they finally told us they will not do it. We waited 2 months without heat for them to say that.

Then i called Michael since his company was listed on the website of the system manufacturer of the unit that had broken down. After a few discussions he found the right unit. His people were awesome and took on a job that everyone had refused and did it. Thank you Michael and team for restoring my faith in the trades. And thank you for making my house warm again.

I will recommend them to anyone who wants true professionals to handle their heating and cooling systems

Thank you for the review and we appreciate your business. It is unfortunate that the previous contractor left you without heat for so long, damaged your high velocity air handler and would not admit nor compensate you for this damage. Unfortunately, contractors with such poor ethics "spoil the apple cart" and leave consumers like yourself with a negative attitude towards contractors who work in your home with pride. We are pleased to hear you have a renewed faith.

Great until something goes wrong

We had used McKinnon previously with a water tank which has been great. We called them when our central AC broke and they recommended a ductless unit on our second floor. The unit only cools the staircase in our house and nothing else. We still need a portable AC unit in our bedrooms and the rest of our house (except for about 100 sq ft in our stairs is uncomfortably hot. When we told them that the unit was not doing as we were told they came to try to fix it and couldn't. They have not offered anything else and this unit was a complete waste. Next year we are going to need a central AC unit and someone to come and remove the ductless unit they installed, what a waste and horrible customer service.

Thanks Alia for the review. We last attended at your home on July 27th and at no charge (despite the 1 year labour warranty had expired) performed a service call to address the issue of poor cooling. During that call, our service technician noted on the work order that if the system continued to not cool well, he recommended that we reclaim the refrigerant, flush and vacuum the system and then add the refrigerant to see if that would help. To date, we have not heard anything back from you. If there is an issue, we would be pleased to address it.

We would also like to note that when we quoted you, we provided an opinion that replacing your central air conditioning system with another one would not be advisable as you felt the system did not perform to your expectations and noted that your home does not have a second floor return air. This was our rationale to recommended a ductless system.

We cannot assist you if you do not communicate to us there is still an issue. Please contact our office to discuss and we would be pleased to help resolve the issue.

Central AC

McKinnon Heating and AC installed a central AC unit, including installing all the exterior wiring, which spanned quite a long way on my house. I was very happy with them because they actually exchanged a unit when the first one was not cooling enough, no questions asked.
Their office staff and the maintenance team is really friendly and helpful. I sincerely appreciated them making the situation right and I was able to enjoy very cool AC after all was fixed. Looking forward to my humidifier in the winter.

Ductless Ac Repair

I have had several repair people in to address my AC leaking water and no one fixed. I called McKinnon and explained what I was going through to try to fix this. The lady on the phone was very helpful and knowledgeable. She gave me a quote for service and sent out Dennis who tested everything and discovered my problem. The system just needed a through cleaning simple fix. He cleaned all the indoor units (something the other contractor did not seem to know how to do or did not want to do) and the outdoor unit, checked the coolant level and made sure the units were draining properly and no longer leaking before he left All working very well now. And the yes the quote given on the phone is what they charged no extra charges no surprises.

Replacing high-velocity vent covers

We asked McKinnon for advice about replacing the high-velocity vent covers for our townhouse. When enquiring about suitable vent covers and requesting a quote, I emailed a description of the HVAC system in our building as per status documents, and detailed pictures and measurements of the vent holes and the old vent covers – which McKinnon's owner also asked for, in order to be able to provide us with the right product.
As it turns out, the vent covers ordered for us by McKinnon are unsuitable for our system, so we asked to return them for a refund. After multiple attempts at contacting them about this issue over about a week, they eventually agreed to take them back but charged us a 15% manufacturer's restocking fee (a considerable amount, given the very high initial price of the vent covers). We eventually ended up purchasing custom-made, laser-cut vent covers for a fraction of the price.
I believe we did nothing wrong, as we were sold the wrong product: it is not our job to identify the part to purchase, or we would not have relied on McKinnon in the first place, and I provided McKinnon with plenty of details to come to the conclusion (before we did) that in fact they did not have the right product for us. I appreciate their help in trying to track down a product for us. However, communication and delivery arrangements were less than ideal. In addition, as McKinnon independently identified the most suitable product for us, and the product did not meet the requirements – both breaches of the terms of sale – we should have been entitled to a full refund.

Company Response

Daniel, it is unfortunate that we were not able to assist you but we tried our best, given the information you provided to us. You advised us that you had a Hi Velocity system and we hand delivered to your home, the Hi Velocity termination plates. After you received them, you had advised that they did not fit and maybe we could assist in installing them. We responded and asked for more information on your system so we could verify that the termination plates were correct. We did not hear back until you arrived at our office with the box of plates and requesting a refund.

We advised you, in writing, that we would gladly accept the product back and refund your money and explained that we would be charged a restocking charge by our distributor and deducted this amount from your refund which we provided.

We are sorry for this inconvenience we have caused you but please understand that we tried our best to help you with your request.
