Clear out or disposal household content: Drain water from waterbed...
I have a Queen-size hard-side waterbed. The wooden frame is about 60 inches by 84 inches with a depth of about 8.5 inches. The vinyl mattress fits in the frame and contains water to a depth of about 6 inches. It probably contains about 170 gallons of water and probably weighs over 1000 pounds. It is about 45 years old and has been in constant use. I want to dispose of it and I need help to drain out the water and dispose of the vinyl mattress. I live in a 2-storey house on a 33 ft. lot in Vancouver without a basement and the bed is in the bedroom on the second floor at the back of the house. The bathroom is close to the bedroom and contains a sink, walk-in shower and bathtub. The bed is close to the window which overlooks the backyard. There are 2 options. The bed could be drained into the bathtub or it could be drained through the window into the backyard. I don’t think a pump can be used as the water is not completely clear. It contains small particles (possibly algae or mould) which would possibly impede a motor. I have a “Blue Magic Waterbed Fill & Drain Kit” which contains a valve adapter to enable connection of a garden hose to the valve in the water bed and also contains a plastic adapter which can replace the aerator on a bathroom faucet enabling the faucet to work as a simple syphon to suction the water out of the mattress. I don’t know whether this kit would work and the garden hose out the window might be the better option. The window opens wide enough but the screen can only be opened from the outside and I have a ladder which reaches the window so that the screen could be removed. It would probably not be possible to drain out all the water so the mattress would contain some water meaning that it would be quite heavy and difficult to remove. I was thinking I might do this myself but I need help as I think this job has to be done by someone who has experience with this type of situation. I will try to upload photos but if they don’t upload, I could send them to you by email.
